Perhaps SOTB was fun in the 50s. Perhaps East Coasters visit because they've never been to Mexico / had real Mexican food / need a bathroom / want to spend money on cheap kitschy items. Lord knows. Th... read more »
We stopped here for a couple of hours one hot August morning to let the kids stretch their legs and burn off some energy on a long road trip. We'd heard about South of the Border for years from friend... read more »

Passed by it on 95 for years. Decided to finally check it out, I was expecting a weird run down tourist trap. I got what I expected. The people were pretty nice, and the surrounding is pretty weird but in a good way. The gas station and convenience store were not well stocked and not very clean. It's not a bad place to check out but don't have super high expectations. It is a pretty good place to stop while on a long trip, to walk around and see something that is not the inside of the car, just maybe don't eat anything not provided in a sealed package from there.
When I was a kid traveling with my family always wanted to stay there but my father said no it just a tourist trap. Finally got to stay there and my father was right. The WiFi did not work inside our room (they admitted that it did not always work in the back rooms ) TV reception was poor constant static on some channels and intermittent static on the other channels. The rooms looked like they had not been updated since fifties or sixties and not in a good way. No coffee pot in room. Despite all the restaurants no way to get food delivered to your room and if you want a Continental breakfast do not stay here because they don't offer one.
South of the Border is a very well known landmark. I stopped in need of a rest stop. The places is pretty cool. There are many attractions and food options. You can buy fireworks there. I want there long, but I'd say i had a good experience.
Not only is this a place for people to stay, but cockroaches too! I was in the room for not even 15 minutes before I saw the first one. Then I saw another a few minutes later and they both ran under the pictures on the wall. If you lift up the pictures on the wall You'll Probably find a whole family of cock roaches. Also the hot water took 10 minutes of running before it even got lukewarm , SOTB also advertises free wifi, but there is None. I wouldn't ever come back or suggest SOTB to anyone unless I was recommending disgusting places to stay , I'm still not sure if Mexico or this place was dirtier .I'm not someone with very high standards but this was rediculous. I HIGHLEY reccomend you guys get this cockroach situation fixed because if one rooms infested , all the rooms are most likely infested too. The only good thing to happen here was the staff gave us extra towels and we didn't even have to ask 🙂 Other than that , we were really excited to check this place out it looked awesome ,only to find out the truth.
We were excited to stay here on our way back from Florida. I called early that afternoon to make a reservation and the front desk lady at the motel said there was no need to reserve because they have plenty of rooms available. We rolled in around 8 pm and went to check in. The lady was helping out someone. After that person left she did not acknowledge us for 5 minutes. Then she took her ugly fat hand and rudely waved us over. She didn't say anything to us, we had to start the conversation. When we asked for a room, she said they didn't have any. We said we called earlier and she said too bad. Never had such horrible customer service in my life. So on our way to a different hotel, I called SOTB motel to speak to a manager and complain. The lady at the front desk answered and said the manager wasn't available right now so she took my name and number for them to call me back. NO CALLS YET! When we got to our new hotel, we talked to the front desk lady there and she said we wouldn't want to stay there anyway because they have BEDBUGS! Fate was on our side. Whatever you do, don't stop at this pathetic excuse for a tourist attraction!
