To remember the period when Berry Gordy and an array of talented artists created the timeless Motown sound, visit Motown Museum. Known as Hitsville, USA, this humble building was once the headquarters and recording studio of the Motown record company and the birthplace of innumerable hits. Artists such as Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye recorded songs here. You can visit the famous Studio A, see a collection of photos and artifacts, and stop by the upper-floor apartment where Berry Gordy and his family used to live. Berry's own stereo system and Michael Jackson's fedora hat and sequined glove are just a few of the treasures here. All tours are guided, and the building is fully accessible to people with special needs. Put Motown Museum at the forefront of your travel plans using our Detroit trip planner .

  • A rare treat to take a tour where it actually all happened. So much history in those walls. Our guide was fantastic! If you enjoy Motown or just 60s music this is a must!  more »
  • At first I was not thrilled that the Museum was a guided tour. The only way to see the museum was on the guided tour. After all was said and done, I was grateful for the tour and the details the Gordy...  more »

  • I love Motown. This was my second visit and it was great. I loved seeing all the photos of my favorites singers and love hearing how Berry Gordy started the company. If you haven't been you should plan it for your next trip.
  • A must-see for anyone visiting Detroit. It's a place of huge cultural and historical significance. Learned so much about the drive and the ingenuity of the people behind music I grew up listening to. Couldn't help but feel moved by the passion our tour guide exuded. Loved it and am so glad I went!
  • Great place to experience where it all began! The tour was pricey, but there is no other place in the world that you can see that much Motown history where it all happened. Great experience!!! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the subject also! Recommend to anyone visiting Detroit.
  • Crysta Cleara's review is pretty true. Plus, the last station on the tour, Studio A, and the gift shop are not handicapped accessible. The tour fee is not particularly expensive; I feel that I definitely got my money's worth. BUT, but, three members of our party were cheated because one was in a wheelchair and two others stayed with her to keep her company. Then too, accessible parking should at least be afforded to the handicapped. Surely, something can be done.
  • It was so awesome getting to learn the history of Motown!! Great tour guide, friendly people :) love love love the music!! My mom use to listen to this music growing up and it was nice to go somewhere she had been :)

Where to stay in Detroit

Detroit offers accommodations to suit every type of traveler, and you don't even have to stay in the central business district to take advantage of the finest hotels. Downtown lodging gives you easy access to most of the city's major attractions, but choosing a more affordable room in Detroit's outlying neighborhoods can also be rewarding. To explore the city's famously diverse neighborhoods, consider staying at a budget-friendly guesthouse on the southwestern side of the city.
