Fisher Building, Detroit
(4.7/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
The Fisher Building is a landmark skyscraper located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard in the heart of the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan. The ornate building is designed in an Art Deco style, constructed of limestone, granite, and several types of marble. The Fisher family financed the building with proceeds from the sale of Fisher Body to General Motors. It was designed to house office and retail space. The building, which contains the elaborate 2,089-seat Fisher Theatre, was designated a National Historic Landmark 29 June 1989. It also houses the headquarters for the Detroit Public Schools.HistoryInitially, architect Joseph Nathaniel French of Albert Kahn Associates planned for a complex of three buildings, with two 30-story structures flanking a 60-story tower. However, the Great Depression kept the project at one tower. The Fisher brothers located the building across from the General Motors Building, now Cadillac Place, as General Motors recently purchased the Fisher Body Company. The two massive buildings spurred the development of a New Center for the city, a business district north of its downtown area.

  • If this building is this beautiful now, imagine when it first opened! A free tour of an era gone by. An interesting story of its history was provided by our excellent guide.
  • Go inside if you are in the area. This has been my favorite building in Detroit. The high ceilings with all the intricate details and painting are spectacular. The Fisher theater is gorgeous too.
  • The Pure Detroit tour of the Fisher Building is a must-do in order to really appreciate the story behind this incredible building. Our guide unpacked the energy and imagination of the city one century...  more »

  • Walt Crawford, although I agree with you that it was deplorable they denied you access to the bathroom, which the public ones are on the lowered level, I am not sure (based on your post) that you being black has anything to do with it. Granted, I was not there so I don't know how the situation transpired. If there was something they said/implied that the denial was based on you being black, I suggest you include that!
  • On September 12, 2016 I made a purchase at the Fisher building cigar shop on the main level floor after Which I saw some security personnel is which way to the restaurant at that point they told me that I could not use the restrooms since I just left the streets Tomei made a purchase it was very rude he claimed he didn't have a key to the restroom they are deplorable since l just made a $25 purchase across from their booth I guess because I am black and had on shorts and gym shoes on that day they assumed that I was a bum whatever, sad commentary on the type of security personnel sad indeed! • The roof looks beautiful. It also has a theatre
  • Not only does it have one of the country's greatest lobbie, but there are also a number of nice art gallaries and stores
  • We have season tickets to the Fisher Theater and we always enjoy visiting this beautiful building. We sometimes even wander around just to look at the architectural details. I know this is in the middle of a business district, but I always wish places like this had more to do at night. Can't wait for next season!
