Landmark Tourist Spot
The Fisher Building is a landmark skyscraper located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard in the heart of the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan. The ornate building is designed in an Art Deco style, constructed of limestone, granite, and several types of marble. The Fisher family financed the building with proceeds from the sale of Fisher Body to General Motors. It was designed to house office and retail space. The building, which contains the elaborate 2,089-seat Fisher Theatre, was designated a National Historic Landmark 29 June 1989. It also houses the headquarters for the Detroit Public Schools.HistoryInitially, architect Joseph Nathaniel French of Albert Kahn Associates planned for a complex of three buildings, with two 30-story structures flanking a 60-story tower. However, the Great Depression kept the project at one tower. The Fisher brothers located the building across from the General Motors Building, now Cadillac Place, as General Motors recently purchased the Fisher Body Company. The two massive buildings spurred the development of a New Center for the city, a business district north of its downtown area.

Where to stay in Detroit

Detroit offers accommodations to suit every type of traveler, and you don't even have to stay in the central business district to take advantage of the finest hotels. Downtown lodging gives you easy access to most of the city's major attractions, but choosing a more affordable room in Detroit's outlying neighborhoods can also be rewarding. To explore the city's famously diverse neighborhoods, consider staying at a budget-friendly guesthouse on the southwestern side of the city.

  • What a gorgeous work of art! Stepping inside this building is like stepping back in time to the Art Deco era. The free tour given is pretty informative about the history of how the building came to be...  more »

  • I've taken 2 tours in the last month, one at the Fisher Bldg and one at the Guardian, and both were superb. I especially want to recognize our tour guide at the Fisher bldg, a young man named Jacob, who was not only a font of knowledge, but whose easy-going and confident presentation was pitch perfect and made the entire tour a joy. It also helped that our group numbered less than 10 people, so there's that. Our guide at the Guardian was Michael, who I'd also recommend for his prolific historical grasp, but whose attempts at humor sometimes felt contrived. All in all, incredibly worth the time, and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a 'mystery trip' with historic and artistic significance.
