Government Building Historic Site
Built in 1869 by Iowa's First Millionaire, Benjamin Franklin Allen, Terrace Hill is one of Iowa's most treasured homes. After Allen suffered a reversal of fortune, he sold "the palace of the prairie" to Frederick Marion Hubbell. The property stayed in the Hubbell family for 70 years and was given by the Hubbell heirs to the State of Iowa in 1971. Since then, Iowa’s governors and their families have lived on the third floor and have graciously entertained dignitaries, school children, and visitors from all over the world.
A visit to Terrace Hill Foundation represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Des Moines trip itinerary planner to plot your vacation.
