Tattered Cover is a bookstore chain in Denver, Colorado. It is one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States. Tattered Cover is open seven days a week at all branches, hosts prominent book signings, and is known for its customer service. Together, the stores maintain an inventory of over half a million books. Its LoDo store houses an events space which can seat over 250, while its Highlands Ranch store can seat up to 400 and its East Colfax store can seat around 100.HistoryTattered Cover opened in 1971 in the Cherry Creek district of Denver as a small 950sqft bookshop. It was purchased in 1974 by Joyce Meskis. Between 1973 and 1983, it expanded seven different times, and in 1986 it moved into and consolidated at a new location in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, which remained open for over 20 years.A second branch, purchased in 1990, was renovated and opened for business in 1994 in Denver's historic LoDo (lower downtown) district. In 1995, the Fourth Story Restaurant & Bar opened at the Cherry Creek location. In November 2004, a third location opened in Highlands Ranch; it lasted until April 2015, when it was moved to Littleton. The Cherry Creek location closed in June 2006 and moved to the newly renovated, long-defunct Lowenstein Theatre on Elizabeth Street at East Colfax Avenue in Denver. The Fourth Story restaurant was shut down at that time.

  • Sit and read, enjoy a coffee and scone. Waiting for your room to be ready? Just stop by here and enjoy an old time book store. I wish there were more places like this in the USA. So quiet, relaxing. G...  more »

  • With many bookstore's closing the Tattered Cover seems to be thriving. It's a bit quaint, but they just make you feel welcome here, plus there is a fantastic selection of books for sale.  more »

  • This is an AMAZING bookstore! Truly worth the visit! I miss the old Cherry Creek location, but the familiarity of the Tattered Cover remains the same at this location. Great selection of new and used books, reading paraphernalia (magnets, bookmarks, cards, etc.), and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I love this place! Simply perfect for bibliophiles! Shop local here!
  • This is an excellent large scale local bookstore in Colorado. This location is refurbished from an old theater adding character to the interior and exterior. The staff are not as friendly as some smaller bookstores in Colorado but they are very knowledgeable once I get their attention. They have a great travel sections with both guidebooks and personal travel memoirs. Their breadth is excellent on both national best sellers and local authors.
  • This is more than a bookstore - it's a place of inspiration, imagination, and creativity. Whether you're looking for a good book to read (they have a great selection with many staff recommendations) or a place to work on your latest project, Tattered Cover Book Store has you covered. I always go out of my way to find local bookstores. I love supporting local businesses and as an avid reader and writer, book stores my natural habitat. This store did not disappoint.
  • Definitely my favorite book store, maybe doesn't have QUITE the charm of some other tiny family owned stores but still miles more than Barnes and Noble and Co. Huge selection of books on every subject and also a large magazine section for every hobby/interest. Prices are a little high but not at all unreasonable, you will be more than willing to support them once you get to know the place. Staff is awesome too
  • Great local, independently owned bookstore. One of the largest I've come across in a long time. Definitely going to revisit in the future!
