Mount Evans, Denver

4.8
#2 of 206 in Nature in Colorado
Towering 4,348 m (14,265 ft) above the Great Plains, Mount Evans serves as a symbol of the Denver skyline and the site of the highest paved road in North America. The peak represents one of Colorado's "fourteeners," mountains standing more than 4,267 m (14,000 ft) high. You can hike and drive along its extensive network of trails and roads. As you make your way to the summit, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and plains; keep an eye out for the occasional grazing buffalo. Take precautions before you go--the peak's extreme weather at the summit and its height can cause altitude sickness. • Decided on a whim to go up Mount Evans on the Fourth of July. It was a little cloudy but still hot but nice and cool up top. The drive was a little nerve wracking in spots as you had to navigate the c...  more »
  • Easy drive up from Denver. It can get crowded on weekends if you don't go early. Clouds usually form by 11am or so, best to get there early for the best views. Last visit there was a herd of mountain ...  more »
  • It's a great but somewhat scary drive. The road is narrow with steep dropoffs. It's a short walk to the summit at the summit parking lot. I believe it is the highest road in the U.S. You get a great v...  more »

  • A must see/do. Breathtaking views the entire way up. Echo Lake is also a beautiful place to stop and visit. Road isn't the best as you get close to the top, but definitely worth visiting. Can be very busy on weekends, especially holiday weekends, and during the peak season.
  • An amazing drive on the way up and down. Not for the faint at heart as the road is right near the edge of the cliffs. But the view from the top makes it worth it. Don't miss it if you are in Colorado during the summer!
  • A wonderful place to visit, but it will be crowded on weekends. The road gets very narrow at the top, so be ready for some close maneuvering. Fantastic views, and a sure fire place to see wild mountain goats.
  • Absolutely gorgeous. Make sure you stop by Summit Lake on your way to the top. There are also many little hiking paths you can take so make sure you park your car on the side on your way to the top to view the scenery and explore. Parking can get difficult midday during busy seasons so make an effort to go early.
  • Awesome place to visit. The highest point in U.S. to drive. Use to be a restaurant here. An observatory, as well. It's 14,200 feet in elevation here. Start of exploring slowly till you get use to the elevation. A must visit. Bring a camera.
