Mount Evans, Denver

4.8
#3 of 143 in Nature in Colorado
Towering 4,348 m (14,265 ft) above the Great Plains, Mount Evans serves as a symbol of the Denver skyline and the site of the highest paved road in North America. The peak represents one of Colorado's "fourteeners," mountains standing more than 4,267 m (14,000 ft) high. You can hike and drive along its extensive network of trails and roads. As you make your way to the summit, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and plains; keep an eye out for the occasional grazing buffalo. Take precautions before you go--the peak's extreme weather at the summit and its height can cause altitude sickness. • This is a very scenic route which could give some thrills for less experience drivers especially on a way down. There is an entrance fee to Mt. Evans. It is very popular route and you should expect cr...  more »
  • Fun place to visit when no thunderstorms around. Weather can change quickly. IT can get crowded at the end of the road.  more »
  • We just drove up and down the mountain and made 1 stop at a look out point, but the views we outstanding. Some stretches of road felt a bit dangerous with sharp turns and steep grade and limited guard...  more »

  • One of the most gorgeous driving experiences I have ever had!! The elevation, combined with cold winds and mind blowing scenery despite the lack of air at 15k feet was an awesome experience. I highly recommend the place to hiking and mountain scenery enthusiasts.
  • So beautiful! Love that you can drive all the way to the top. Great for the friends who are visiting only for 1 or 2 days and want to show them a great view from a 14er without taking a full day away.
  • Absolutely beautiful. The park was great we made it all the way to the top just before it closed down for winter. It was chilly up there but we did see a bunch of mountain goats! You have two options when driving through the park you can either go just to the lake or go all the way up to the top.
  • At one time this was the highest paved Road in North America. I'm not sure if it still is or not. Not many places you can go in North America and get above the Treeline so close to a major city. If you're lucky you will see bighorn sheep as well as mountain goats.
  • Quick access (when road is open) to the top of a stunning 14er. If you visit between 6-7am then your chances are very high of seeing the wildlife roaming around. The gift store at the main gate has is worth stopping in for the homemade brownies!

Where to stay in Denver

For a touch of class near all Denver's major attractions, book a room at one of the city's historical hotels, built during the late-19th century silver rush. Denver's oldest hotels feature opulent oak furnishings, silver chandeliers, and frescoed walls, as well as spacious rooms packed with high-tech gadgets. If you're planning your visit on a limited budget, consider the affordable hostels and bed and breakfasts located outside the central part of town. Alternatively, you can also stay at one of the mid-range hotels near the airport.
