Denver Zoo, Denver

4.4
#1 of 15 in Outdoors in Denver
The first natural-style zoo in North America, Denver Zoo is home to 3,800 animals of more than 650 species. Look for features like bear mountain and the largest gorilla enclosure in the world (where you might find gorillas are napping in their hammocks). In the zoo's open aviaries, walk among exotic birds and even some two-toed sloths. To really get up close to the animals, head to the giraffe enclosure, where you can feed these gentle giants some lettuce. Check the daily schedule for wildlife presentations. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Denver holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Denver Zoo and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

First visit to this zoo and was really impressed. Animals were active, weather was great and everyone loved seeing the tiger cage. Walkways are a little disorganized but they have maps. We spent about...  more »

First visit 5.28.17. Being no strangers to zoos we were happy to pay a visit to Denver's. It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, ranking as one of the best zoo experiences in recent memory. The...  more »

Great zoo near a nice park in Denver. There was a nice variety of animals and they all seemed to have a good amount of space in their enclosures. The giraffes were a fun sight. I would have liked more...  more »

I love this place. Great exhibits where the animals are usually in natural habitats and you can see them up close through glass or railings. Also, you can bring in your own food and there are plenty of places to sit down. In the spring the flowers are amazing, though the setting is pretty all year. I love the big trees. I'm glad the Zoo doesn't have as many geese as once took up residence there. They could be aggressive with young and they were everywhere. Parking can be a pain, but if you go early or after 1 it is easy to find close parking.

Denver Zoo is an awesome place. The animals always seem to be out. The Ice cream and most foods are really good. If you awe wandering around when its in the upper 70's or higher most of the animals are sleeping. Other than that its a great place. If you plan on going more than once in a year you might as well buy the year membership for $40 The only con is parking. You may find a spot right a way or drive around 10 minutes looking for a spot, then another 10 minutes waiting for a mom to put her baby in the car and the stroller.... and whatever else she was carrying.

The Denver Zoo, her animals and staff were all amazing! My whole family had an amazing time! Your staff was incredibly informed, answering questions, telling us about the animals and their history and were all welcoming. I especially enjoyed our time with Mariah, your courtesy driver, she drove us twice and both times she was great! She explained about the animals as we passed, allowed us time to take pictures and was super sweet!

I love this place! I'm already a huge fan of zoos but I felt this one was by far one of the best ones. Google said people only spend "25 minutes here" but that is SO untrue! I ended up spending about 2 and a half hours here and I didn't even get to see everything. I would definitely recommend and come back!

We love our local zoo. It is a great place to visit with the kids in any season. It gives us a nice activity to zoo all summer long when the kids don't want to visit the splash parks and in the winter the animals are inside so you get a more up close look. I also love having the option to go to the events that the zoo puts on.

Where to stay in Denver

For a touch of class near all Denver's major attractions, book a room at one of the city's historical hotels, built during the late-19th century silver rush. Denver's oldest hotels feature opulent oak furnishings, silver chandeliers, and frescoed walls, as well as spacious rooms packed with high-tech gadgets. If you're planning your visit on a limited budget, consider the affordable hostels and bed and breakfasts located outside the central part of town. Alternatively, you can also stay at one of the mid-range hotels near the airport.
