Colorado State Capitol, Denver
(4.3/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
With its gold-plated dome and elegant design, Colorado State Capitol is one of the stunners in the Denver skyline. Inside the building constructed from white Colorado granite, stained-glass windows tell the stories of the state's past. The gold on the dome symbolizes the Colorado Gold Rush. Head inside to see marble that's found only in Colorado, such as White Yule and Colorado Rose Onyx. The western steps bear the mile-high signs that mark the city's elevation. A tour of the building takes you through the state chambers and allows you admire the architecture, learn about the history of Colorado, and enjoy the view of the city and the Rocky Mountains from the observation area on the dome. Tours are free, but reserve your spot at least two weeks in advance due to limited space and high demand. Work out when and for how long to visit Colorado State Capitol and other Denver attractions using our handy Denver itinerary planner.

  • with the mile high marker on the steps to it. fascinating building in a very young state and a change from the high rise
  • Had to go on the 13th step to reach a mile above sea level! It's easy to get to, nice place to visit and take pictures.
  • Definitely worth a visit, but be warned there were many homeless people wandering the area, so if that makes you uncomfortable, then be prepared.

  • The Colorado state capital building is quite beautiful and worth getting a chance to see in person. My main complaint would that the it is currently under renovations to the outside of the building. Worth taking a visit to see and tour the inside. And make sure to find the step marked "One Mile Above Sea Level". Denver is the Mile High City after all!
  • The capital building is a beautiful building with nice architecture not often found in the west. One feature that really stood out to me was in the rotunda there is a wonderful mural showing the history of Colorado.
  • Beautiful building and so many interesting rooms. While touring the Capitol building, it's hard not noticing how many tax dollars were spent on this palace. Get past that fact, this place is quite interesting. The HVAC ducts could use a deep cleaning as we felt the air quality was not so good inside after spending an hour walking around. We are active and healthy, wonder how employees feel after a few months or decades working in this building.
  • Great free tour of the capitol building. No need to register for a tour weeks in advance.
  • The structure is beautiful. The rotunda is stunning. An upper level has paintings of the governors of Colorado. The memorable feature is the "Mile High" engraved marker on the front steps depicting a mile above sea level.
