Colorado State Capitol, Denver

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Government Building
With its gold-plated dome and elegant design, Colorado State Capitol is one of the stunners in the Denver skyline. Inside the building constructed from white Colorado granite, stained-glass windows tell the stories of the state's past. The gold on the dome symbolizes the Colorado Gold Rush. Head inside to see marble that's found only in Colorado, such as White Yule and Colorado Rose Onyx. The western steps bear the mile-high signs that mark the city's elevation. A tour of the building takes you through the state chambers and allows you admire the architecture, learn about the history of Colorado, and enjoy the view of the city and the Rocky Mountains from the observation area on the dome. Tours are free, but reserve your spot at least two weeks in advance due to limited space and high demand. • As a voting taxpayer for a good number of years, it was about time to actually visit the capitol, with out of state guests of course. It provides a smaller, more western take on the US Capitol, with access to many interior hallways as well as senate and house chambers. We visited on a working day and saw a number of legislators, who no doubt worked hard to be elected and are well known to the politically connected, as well as the requisite lobbyists and so on. The views are striking and the marble and granite are quite incredible, worth taking a look at as you walk the halls and staircases.
  • Went with a large group of family, including a couple small kids, and everyone very much enjoyed the tour. Our tour guide was extremely passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He kept us a bit longer than "scheduled," but we were grateful to learn more. The views from the top are stunning. A must in downtown Denver.
  • Such a nice place.. i dont know but we noticed theres not that much traffic... Denver the Capital of Colorado is such full of historic landmark 19th century buildings with mix of ultra modern buildings and complex..
  • Incredible building and a mandatory stop for visitors. Not too much to do, but worth taking a free walk through.
  • It's no Kansas State Capitol but interesting all the same. The upper level museum is a neat idea but the best part is finding the Mile High stair on the front steps of the capitol building. Do not feed the squirrels - they're crazy.
