Clyfford Still Museum, Denver

4.5
#7 of 16 in Museums in Denver
Clyfford Still is considered one of the most important and significant artists of the 20th century. He originated the Abstract Expressionism movement and influenced the work of contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Few artists of this magnitude have left behind such a comprehensive and mysterious collection of work. And never before has the world seen such a collection of work displayed intact, and under one roof. The Clyfford Still Museum provides visitors with an unprecedented opportunity to view and appreciate Still's extraordinary art and life. The size and significance of the collection, coupled with the extraordinary building design, makes this Museum unlike any other.

  • Mr. Still was an artist who did homage pieces to some of the modern greats. Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, etc. His later works do get dark and weird.  more »

  • The most beautiful museum in Colorado. Still never ceases to awe, however, the wall decals are distracting and almost viewed more than the actual work present.
  • Very interesting, although the proposal of constantly comparing the painting with other masterpieces reduces the contemplation pleasure.
  • Coming from an interior design and architure background, the poured concrete walls and ceilings with wood form impressions is more athleticly pleasing than the art itself. But art is subjective.
  • I have been wanting to go to this museum for years and finally got the change to check it out. The museum is set up in a great flow from his early life to the end of his works. They are repeatedly changing the works so you can visit often and see new things.
  • One of my best museum experiences ever. The space is a marvel of architectural design and the displays provide a thorough insight into Still's world. Love the commitment to new curation every few months. Fantastic.

Where to stay in Denver

For a touch of class near all Denver's major attractions, book a room at one of the city's historical hotels, built during the late-19th century silver rush. Denver's oldest hotels feature opulent oak furnishings, silver chandeliers, and frescoed walls, as well as spacious rooms packed with high-tech gadgets. If you're planning your visit on a limited budget, consider the affordable hostels and bed and breakfasts located outside the central part of town. Alternatively, you can also stay at one of the mid-range hotels near the airport.
