Mountain Nature / Park
Rising 6,168 m (20,237 ft) above sea level, Denali is the tallest mountain in North America and the center of Denali National Park. Also known as Denali, it has two significant summits. The taller South Summit is the third most prominent peak in the world. Five glaciers slide down the slopes of the mountain. Every year the park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors eager to take a close look at the mountain's majesty. However, you won't necessarily be able to see the peak; it's often completely obscured by clouds, even on a clear day. Use our Denali National Park and Preserve vacation builder to add Denali and other attractions to your Denali National Park and Preserve vacation plans.

Where to stay in Denali National Park and Preserve

Six campgrounds sit inside Denali National Park; five are open in summer and one provides camping year-round. A few privately owned wilderness lodges occupy private land within the park. Most visitors stay outside the park in hotels, motels, lodges, inns, and bed and breakfasts. You'll find most of these in the towns of Healy and Cantwell, 17.7 km (11 mi) and 48.3 km (30 mi) south of the park, respectively. Most businesses list their address as a milepost. The park's entrance sits at mile 237 on the highway, with mile markers increasing as you head north.

  • We took the school bus tour into our National Park. It is the only way to get in - unless you have a scheduled travel and camping plan with the park and even then - you cannot pass a certain point wit...  more »
  • The bus tour picked us up at the Denali Cabins. Our bus was a simple school bus but comfortable. Our driver/host/guide was excellent (Earl). We saw the "big five" but cloudy weather precluded seeing M...  more »
