Gorgeous winery location nestled in the woods. Ample seating inside and out. Very friendly staff. We sampled 10 wines. The reds were all wonderful, the whites a bit hit and miss but overall very good wines. We've seen some reduced ratings for Anterra wines but they must be based on the whites only. The reds are well worth the visit. Of the whites/rose the best was the the dry rose rated a 7.5 (out of 10) followed by the Chenin Blanc at a 7. We tried the two of the Chardonnays (the Zero and Amphora) which rated out at 5.5 and 6.0. The florally Traminette was a 6.0. The reds were a different story. The Petite Sirah was only a 6.5 but the rest of the reds were superb - Cab Frac (8.0), Petite Verdot (8.5), Tannat (8.5) and the Crooked Run blend was a 9.0. We bought some bottles and a couple of the wonderful craft items they have on offer. Definitely worth return visits. You won't be disappointed.
Has been for years, and remains, our favorite winery in VA and the DC metro area even after an extensive visit to the Monticello Wine Trail. Clean wines are important to us, and more so, enjoyable and tasty wines. Arterra offers both in a quaint and beautiful woodsy setting. The staff is knowledgeable and pleasant, the owners very welcoming. They offer pottery and glazing classes, as well as pottery items for sale that one of the owners makes, often with leaves off their own vines. They have a cozy outdoor fire pit in the cooler months and the indoor is modern rustic. It’s easy to hang out here. After years of resisting, I finally had to join their wine club - it is by far the best clean wine.
The outdoor seating area is under many canopy trees, which gives the feeling of enjoying wine in the forest, unique among the other wineries in the area. The outdoor area also allows dogs on leashes, and they offer bowls of water to dog visitors. The outside tables also have table service, which is nice because that allows more time in the forest and the servers are great. The wines are fermented using naturally occurring yeasts and one wine in particular is aged in a clay vessel, which is a very old style of making wine. The wine itself is sadly the only flaw. Perhaps this isn't a style of wine-making that I enjoy. I look forward to visiting this winery again in the next couple years to see if it has improved or my tastes have changed.
My wife with are best buds planned a afternoon at our favorite winery. Just before arriving we got a flat tire . Jason was quick to help us , he offered his help with trying to plug our tire . Not so sure that would happen any where else . We had a wonderful afternoon enjoying a lovely afternoon great wine and it was a perfect day to enjoy outdoors . We will be back. Thanks
Took a spontaneous road trip and ended up at this lovely place. Love the woodsy setting, the BEAUTIFUL artwork and photos. The staff is very friendly, Kelley especially. Wines are clean, you can taste it. The two reds I tried were really good for the region. Ended up buying a bottle of the Traminette after a whim sampling (was going to get the Rose or a red). But the T has an effervescence that was my deciding factor. The bottles are very pretty too, not the label type but art. Definitely recommend and look forward to going back.
