  • In and out of the Artists Palette road is blocked off and closed. Possibly from recent rainfall. Had folks with us that had not seen before. Check at Furnace Creek Ranger station before attempting.
  • We made a stop here before head us to Badwater. Pretty small winding road in the heart of rocks, and really beautiful mountain! At the end of the path in down on the road that leads to Badwater we stop to admire Artist's Palette!, great geological formation with the rock to the colors red, green, pink, purple! The road is in excellent condition in bitumen!, unlike some who are stony.

  • The drive takes your through a badland/canyon that has a lot of different minerals. The minerals make up the different colors which is why they call it Artists Palette. It's just one part of a multitu...  more »

  • Artist's Drive is a one way loop of approximately 9 miles with plenty of view points and hikes along the way. The best part of the drive is the Artist's Palate view point. The best views are during sunset and the colors truly pop for 10-15 minutes after the sun has set. Make sure to get there a little early as parking is limited. You can also park your car on shoulders on either sides of the road (NEVER go off road to park) and then hike to the view point. Hike down the canyons is well worth the effort as you can get close to all those colored hills. Bring plenty of water.
  • Amazing colors. Go either just after dawn or an hour before sunset.
  • One of the most visited spots in Death Valley, and for good reason. Sunset colors at Artist's Palette are gorgeous. Make sure to hike into the Palette and look at the varying colors up close!
  • Photographers: I prefer this location for sunset. It can be difficult to get quality images here. The colors are wonderful but shadows can be an issue. I highly recommend scouting the entire loop before sunset. Give yourself a few hours for the recon. Identify a couple of locations ahead of time. Stage at the loop entrance (it's a one way loop). Then wait to see what the sunset light will be like. Good luck and happy picture taking! Steve J. Giardini Photography
  • Don't miss it if you visit the park and you're arriving from Badwater Road. Artists Drive is an awesome drive and you will see beautiful rocks formation.
