  • The most scenic unit of the John Day Fossil Beds with five areas to explore. The Painted Hill and Carroll Rim Trails give you great views of the colorful hills from the ground and from the top of the rim. The Painted Cove Trail takes you on a boardwalk through the area that looks like the planet Mars. The Leaf Hill Trail is the least colorful, but thousands of fossils have been found in the area. The Scar Knoll Trail has smaller hills with intense colors. The Painted Hills Unit has some of the most iconic and photographed formations of the John Day Fossil Beds. The trails are mostly short with the exception of Carroll Rim, which is a steep climb. The hills are less crowded in the morning and not as hot as the afternoon.
  • It's a bit of a drive out to nowhere, but the best places on the planet are always hard to get to. Yes, the hills do look painted. Almost unreal. Go close to sunset and you get quite the pastel pallet experience. Forget the stupid voodoo donuts and microbreweries in Portland, and take a look at what nature has to offer.
  • What an excellent place. If you go when it is raining, plan accordingly which means it is MUDDY. Wear appropriate shoes. Poles are also helpful.
  • Stunning beautiful in the mountain area of Oregon.
  • We went there during March and the view is so awesome with lill snow on there and we got a chance to click beautiful pictures
