  • It was fantastic to visit the nation's first airport and stand on the field where the Wrights tested their first practicable aircraft. I enjoyed seeing a replica of the catapult that was used. Next to...  more »

  • We love visiting Huffman Prairie flying field. We visited on a cold blustery day and didn't stay long. Most people attribute and give credit to fly in history in the Wright brothers to Kitty Hawk and have no idea of the history of Huffman Prairie. We Loved our visit here and are glad that it is preserved for us to continue learning about the history that was made in the area and particularly in that location. We can't wait to go back in nicer weather and visit the hanger and visit more of the placards and spend more time and the flying field.
  • Docked a star for no restroom or garbage cans anywhere useful. Some good history here, along with a well cared for grassland. Just make sure you check yourself/dog for ticks if you walk through the grass field.
  • I am glad I was able to take a bicycle ride along the Huffman Prairie bike trail to this spot, which is arguably far more significant than Kitty Hawk in the contribution to aviation produced here. If you haven't already visited one of the visitor centers, it may be more informative to visit the great rangers and exhibits at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park visitor center by the Wright Memorial, on a hilltop west of here. While here, admire how the National Park Service has done a wonderful job keeping the area as historically accurate as possible, down to a rebuilt hangar for the Wright Flyer's nightly storage. It is quite exciting to recall all the hard work that was performed here, the failures, corrections, and eventually many successes. It is also interesting to think that you are standing in the same spot where the first machine to fly continuously was stored, the Wright Flyer being another character in addition to the brothers in the story of the birth of flight. The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is nearby, showing the legacy that this place started a bit over a century ago. I saw an aircraft, faintly visible, flying high in the atmosphere over this area, and it gives a sentimental feeling for the progress that we as humans have made over the past century. It also fosters a sense for the humble beginnings and an urge to protect a sustainable path to the future to share this with many more generations.
  • Beautifully preserved flying field. There are white flags that can be seen from far away which mark the circular paths that the wright bros used to do circles around the field in front of large crowds, here in the middle of nowhere. To be able to stand on the field, close your eyes and imagine all the amazing events that took place a long long time ago. It felt spiritually surreal to me and I'm not even an aviation enthusiast. I got there on an early Sunday morning and had the whole place to myself. If I ever visit again it will be as a jogger so that I can lap the entire field and read all the signs.
  • This is an absolute must for any aviation fanatic. The feeling you get walking around the prairie is amazing. There is so much history here.
