#1 of 6 in Things to do in Davis
Blackwater Falls State Park is located in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, West Virginia, USA. The centerpiece of the Park is Blackwater Falls, a 62ft cascade where the Blackwater River leaves its leisurely course in Canaan Valley and enters rugged Blackwater Canyon. It is among the most photographed venues in the state and appears on calendars, stationery, advertisements of all kinds and, most famously, on jigsaw puzzles. The River is named for its tannins-darkened water.GeographyBlackwater Falls State Park is located about two miles southeast of the town of Davis. It protects of red spruce and eastern hemlock upland forest. The FallsThe "Great Falls" of Blackwater River drop about 62ft at the head of Blackwater Canyon. The major ledge is composed of Connoquenessing sandstone of the Middle Pottsville Formation. The Falls are usually cited as the highest above-ground falls (there are higher cave falls) in the state. A rocky prominence near the center of the Falls divides its waters into a distinctive formation, rendering its images instantly recognizable. In winter, the Falls often ice over completely. A broad trail descends about 320ft from the Falls parking lot to a wooden walkway and overlook, while a much steeper trail extends beyond to the basin below the Falls. On the opposite (west) side of the river, a longer trail ("Gentle Trail") also accesses the Falls from a higher vantage point.

  • It was a scenic area and it was a good place to see the fall colors. The falls is easy to access. There is a short hike down to the falls, but is worth the short hike to see the falls. We came just to...  more »
  • We've visited Blackwater Falls a few times and are always in awe of them. We visited after a heavy rainstorm and were rewarded with thundering falls! The view was well worth the walk down the stairs a...  more »
  • Snow/slush on the walkway to viewing points was the reason I was being extra carful with where I placed my feet, plus hanging onto the railing. So, I was surprised that my feet slipped out, causing me...  more »

  • Rustic cabin accommodations or stay in the lodge. Beautiful views of mountains, waterfalls, forests. Tranquil setting with good outdoor activities. We'll maintained hiking trails were not overly used. Restaurant in lodge had good food, but nothing fancy. Cabin was clean and comfortable. I will return there for another visit.
  • I've been going here since I was young. It's a great place for anyone looking to relax and get away. Renting a cabin is definitely the way to go. I'd recommend the older cabins, as they're closer to the trails. I also love going into the nearby towns to shop. A very relaxing vacation and beautiful getaway!
  • One stop shop! Hiking, Biking and Fishing, boating, camping, etc all in one place. Great hiking trails and super friendly staff. Hidden gem within 2.5 hours of Northern Virginia.
  • Love going to the Falls. The stairs are well maintained and the views are fantastic. Bit of a hike back up the steps, though, so be prepared if you have bad joints or otherwise have some difficulty to stairs.
  • A wonderful park. Great mountain biking for my boys and nice hiking trails for the rest of us. The cabin was perfect for a weekend.
