Nice stop for some history... could be more. We saw signs for this on a recent trip, and read about it while continuing our journey. We were fascinated by tales of the Scottish highlanders who settled in the area that we found on the web, but were disappointed to find they were hardly mentioned in the information for this site. The reconstructed block house was worth climbing to to appreciate the strategic importance of the site. It was very hot the day we were there, and decided to pass on the nature walk to a period cottage. The cemetery on site seems recently improved, but there was very little information, including none of the graves are marked with names or history of the occupants. Caution: There is no room for oversized vehicles in the parking lot, and we had to back our truck and very small camper back out into the street. As we back out, we say the fine print sign saying that RV's must park along the street out front. This sign was only visible after you had already committed to pulling through the gate. They need much larger signage OUTSIDE to warn RV travelers to park out front.
Parking was limited, very small lot. Admission was pricey. There was a wedding getting ready to be held so we felt a bit rushed. Otherwise, beautiful views.
Love the visit. We also loved the cannon and musket demonstrations.
Great area to explore and not super packed compared to other historical sites I've been too. Great trails and the fort is an awesome place to explore and is great with kids. Overall a very enjoyable historic site visit.
This place is a family tradition. We travel here yearly from Birmingham for 18 years now!
