Stony Brook State Park, Dansville

(4.4/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Stony Brook State Park is a state park of New York in the United States. It is located south of Dansville in Steuben County on New York State Route 36. Stony Brook State Park Campground is short distance away. The Park has two entrances, upper and lower, connected (other than Route 36) only by the stream and trails. The signature attraction of the park is the eponymous brook, which is an example of small, post-glacial streams in the Finger Lakes area. The small creeks and brooks in this area cut through the Great Lakes-area escarpments following retreat of the ice age glaciers, creating deep, narrow gorges, with many waterfalls, which are uncommonly accessible. As do some other parks in the region, such as Fillmore Glen State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, and Buttermilk Falls State Park, the park features a semi-natural swimming pool, created by a small dam constructed in the lower reaches of the stream.Stony Brook became a summer tourist spot in the late 19th century, following the construction of a railroad in 1883. The resort fell into decline by the 1920s. New York state resurrected the area by buying the land and establishing the state park in 1928.

  • A nice surprise! There are deeper sections of the stream that you can swim in that have a lifeguard on duty. You can also walk a bit further into the park and see waterfalls and get into the water around them, but the water is not deep enough to swim in.
  • Percect for a day trip or a multi-day campong stay. Great swimming, hiking, and canpsites
  • Wonderful views, great family place, great for weddings parties, BBQ, REUNIONS, the list goes on, beautiful swimming, in the fall the changing of the leaves simply beautiful
  • This is a nice park and gave a nice short hike, but it's nowhere near as impressive as some of the other parks around. Doesn't really compare to Watkins Glen or Letchworth.
  • It was fabulous!! the fresh fast flowing water which one could walk through formed natural whirlpool in niches that one could sit and relax in.. The ease with which one could get close to the beautiful water fall felt great .. Totally recommend it as a beautiful getaway in the heart of nature
