Stony Brook State Park is a state park of New York in the United States. It is located south of Dansville in Steuben County on New York State Route 36. Stony Brook State Park Campground is short distance away. The Park has two entrances, upper and lower, connected (other than Route 36) only by the stream and trails. The signature attraction of the park is the eponymous brook, which is an example of small, post-glacial streams in the Finger Lakes area. The small creeks and brooks in this area cut through the Great Lakes-area escarpments following retreat of the ice age glaciers, creating deep, narrow gorges, with many waterfalls, which are uncommonly accessible. As do some other parks in the region, such as Fillmore Glen State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, and Buttermilk Falls State Park, the park features a semi-natural swimming pool, created by a small dam constructed in the lower reaches of the stream.Stony Brook became a summer tourist spot in the late 19th century, following the construction of a railroad in 1883. The resort fell into decline by the 1920s. New York state resurrected the area by buying the land and establishing the state park in 1928.Make Stony Brook State Park part of your personalized Dansville itinerary using our Dansville day trip planning site .

Stony Brook State Park Reviews
Off season the roads are plowed so you can walk the three upper loops, and the lower park too. Very few folks are there, so it is quite nice to be alone in nature. I often go with a friend, but feel c... more »
very beautiful and peaceful here love going and just walking through the park and seeing all the different nature more »
Really enjoyed a visit to this park - a smaller gorge than some other parks in this area of NY state however equally as beautiful and much, much less crowded. Arrived after the booth had closed on a w... more »
The campsites were a bit close together but that's somewhat to be expected with state parks. Our site backed right up to the brook so we took the kids down there for some hiking and playing. The playground is big with plenty to do despite being busy. The rest of the park was nice including the swimming area. We'll definitely return in years to come.
I have visited Stony Brook State Park for family reunions nearly every year since I was a very young child. (Over 25 years) I have some very fond memories of swimming in the icy cold pools, wading up stream, but new visitors beware!, this is not allowed any more, and a hefty fine will be imposed upon you by the park rangers. Hiking is fantastic, the falls and natural shale-stone gorges are amazing. Picnic areas are abundant and there are even campsites available. I give it 4 stars because the rules for swimming have become a lot more stricter even within the past 3 years. We couldn't even go under the mini falls between the shallow and the deeper swim areas. Disappointed. Otherwise the facilities for picnics and other events are great!
I have been coming here my whole life. It is one of the nicest and well maintained state parks I have been to. You feel very much like you are surrounded by nature, but you still have the luxuries necessary for glamping. My understanding is the are changing the loop structure and combining/removing some sites this coming off season, so be sure to make sure you request the appropriate site number and get your reservations in early!
Of course this place is PACKED in the summer months... it's awesome! We absolutely love going to Stoney Brook. I'll admit the pool is always FREEZING cold but what better way to spend a hot summer day?! The playground has a lot of variety for toddlers and older kids. There are plenty of options for picnicking places. We hiked the trails (7 mos post knee surgery) it kicked my rear but I returned for more. As for the folks complaining about the fees for wading in the river, I honestly don't think it's worth complaining or degrading the rating of this beautiful park. (If you look at their website you'll see they have good reason for enforcing their new rules.). If your in the area I highly recommend stopping in, You won't regret exploring this gorgeous park!
This is a great place for a quiet walk. The trail isn't very difficult along the brook. There are some nice views and plenty of picture opportunities. I've been going here since '83 and it hasn't changed. There are some nice places to get a quick bite in Dansville after your hike.
