Consolidated Gold Mine, Dahlonega

Tourist Spot
Strike it rich at Consolidated Gold Mine, offering underground mine tours and gold panning lessons. Located near the "Gold City" of Dahlonega, this mine played an important role in the "Georgia Gold Rush" of the 19th century. Although the large-scale mining operations folded decades ago, a section of the mine's richest shaft, known as the "Glory Hole," remains open for tourists curious about the traditional methods of panning for gold. The underground tour displays the original cart rails, electrical lines, and an operational pneumatic drill recovered from the mine's deeper levels. This tour descends about 60 m (200 ft) below ground, so wear appropriate closed-toe shoes for your visit. • My husband and I went on a tour of the mine with Miner Tom - he was entertaining, engaging, informative, and answered every single one of my many questions. I love learning history and how our society has progressed so this place, with all its history, was a great setting to learn about the evolution of mining. We also did some gold panning which was a fun interactive process. The gift shop was well stocked too. We ran out of time to find gemstones but Will probably be back next year.
  • Took the family. Got a $30 and a $50 bucket of gems. The kids hag a great time going through them - found some rubies, emeralds, amethyst and a sapphire. It was a lot of fun - the kids really enjoyed it
  • Awesome place. My 4yr old had a great time. Great tour. Worth the money.
  • Everyone was super friendly. Our tour guide was hilarious and made an educational experience very fun! Even my skeptical teenagers were impressed.
  • Did the gold panning and gemstones. Found some beautiful, high quality stones. 1in particular will be made ibto a ring. They valued ay $2,000. to $3,000. as a finished ring.....1lady there has her wedding rings from stones found there. The guys who help show you how to pan, very polite, patient & helpful. Young lady that helped identify the "gemstones" was "Miner Nish" and always had a smile, answered questions. We came back the next day to do more..Saw us walk in, gave a big wave, called out.. "Your back" and took a minute to see what we were going to be doing. Excellent help...Clean.... the jewelry people who cut/mount stones were polite & helpful. Gift shop was not out of line in pricing. Will be back here, will stop in again. DEFINITELY..A MUST VISIT STOP.
