Consolidated Gold Mine, Dahlonega
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Strike it rich at Consolidated Gold Mine, offering underground mine tours and gold panning lessons. Located near the "Gold City" of Dahlonega, this mine played an important role in the "Georgia Gold Rush" of the 19th century. Although the large-scale mining operations folded decades ago, a section of the mine's richest shaft, known as the "Glory Hole," remains open for tourists curious about the traditional methods of panning for gold. The underground tour displays the original cart rails, electrical lines, and an operational pneumatic drill recovered from the mine's deeper levels. This tour descends about 60 m (200 ft) below ground, so wear appropriate closed-toe shoes for your visit. Using our international travel planner, Dahlonega attractions like Consolidated Gold Mine can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Staff was friendly and informative. Mine was lots of fun and fairly easy. After an initially steeper slope, there is about three flights of stairs followed by a well lit gently sloping tunnel. The tour guide was very patient with us while taking pictures and video. Panning for gold (included with the mine tour) was interesting, but a little tough on the lower back. Each of us got 2-4 flakes of gold. The gem mining is much easier and more rewarding. Don't forget to check out the baby white bats next to the gem appraiser!
  • Great place would highly recommend for anyone that's interested! When I went I did the mine tour which includes panning I only got 3 flakes of gold but it was so much fun the time it took was definitely worth it! There are picnic tables outside which worked out great because me and my family had brought sandwiches to eat for lunch. Overall this place is great I will definitely be going back.
  • A MUST DO IF IN THE AREA!! Would give more than 5* if possible. We stayed in Helen, Ga and after googling for a gold mine to visit we decided on consolidated. It's not too far from Helen and so worth going. You will not see nor experience anything better then this tour. It is reasonable and not only gives you a 40 minute tour down inside a real gold mine that can be reopened any time the price of gold rises enough to make it worth the expense to run the mine again, but also you are able to pan for some gold. You come away with a cool keepsake of your gold in a tube. You can also pan for jewels which we did not. A could we spoke to did and showed off a beautiful ring that they had made on a prior trip. The staff is very personable and so very informative. You do have to walk down stairs to get down into the mine in case this present a problem. The panning was easily accessible to all. The best adventure ever - DO NOT MISS IT!!!
  • We had such a good time at the gold mines. Our 6 year old, Alex, has been many times with Kids R Kids daycare. We decided to check it out as a family. It was so much fun, I highly recommend it for any age. If you have small kids definately do the panning for jewels. J.D. was our tour guide. I could not have asked for a better tour. It was very interesting and we learned a lot. Great for adults and children. J.D. is awesome. He touched my heart with his great stories. He is so friendly and giving of his time. It was really a pleasure meeting such a nice person. Thanks J.D.! We will be back again.
  • Tour was really cool. Loved the air powered jack hammer demonstration. Tour guide was awesome. We arrived early Friday morning. First tour, two buses full of third graders showed up right behind us. Got really busy in the gold panning area for about 30min. We asked to do a $50 bucket of gem stones and we were asked to wait. We decided to skip that and just give the kids that money to spend in the gift shop. While we were in the gift shop the school kids had cleared out and the manager says sorry about the wait. I have you a $100 gem bucket set up for your family for free. We were blown away. The mine is great but the staff makes this place a 5 star attraction.
