Gordon Roberts House, Cumberland

4.5
#8 of 12 in Things to do in Cumberland
The Gordon-Roberts House was built for the 1869 C & O Canal president Josiah H. Gordon in 1867. Elizabeth (Humbird) Roberts later purchased the mansion for her husband and family, who would go on to live at 218 Washington St and thereabouts for many years. In 1954, the mansion was sold by a Roberts relation to The Allegany County Historical Society to be used in the preservation of local history. Over the years 218 Washington Street was called The Roberts-Millholland House and would become lovingly known as "History House". Eventually the mansion was renamed The Gordon-Roberts House and today operates as an historic house museum where guests of all ages experience what living in the late 1800's in The Queen City was like. In addition, the museum frequently hosts weddings and other private events. The Gordon-Roberts House remains the headquarters of The Allegany County Historical Society, today a non-profit organization working to promote history and education through special programs, unique trunk shows and field trips tailored to students and educators needs. The ACHS now enjoys working relationships with many public, private and home-school groups in Allegany, Bedford and Mineral County. The house that was once known as History House has become just that- the house where Cumberland history lives.
