The Cove Palisades State Park is a state park in eastern Jefferson County, Oregon, near Culver and Madras in the central part of the state, and is administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. It is located on the waters and surrounding lands of Lake Billy Chinook, an impoundment of the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius rivers.Visitor opportunitiesThe park offers two full-service campgrounds, rental cabins, food and supplies for sale, marina access to Lake Billy Chinook with watercraft rentals, fishing, day use and picnic areas, and hiking trails. The park also offers historical interpretation, which includes the Crooked River Petroglyph in the park.Lake Billy ChinookLake Billy Chinook lies in canyons carved by the three rivers into earth held in place by basaltic caprock. Construction of the Round Butte Dam was completed in 1964 across the Deschutes River. Operated by Portland General Electric (PGE), and jointly owned by PGE and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the dam and lake primarily provide electric generation for thousands of homes throughout the state. The Confederated Tribes named the lake in honor of Billy Chinook, a member of the Wasco tribe who acted as a guide in 1843 and 1844 for John C. Frémont and Kit Carson in the region of the lake. The lake extends beyond the boundaries of The Cove Palisades State Park.

  • Ended the camping season with a last minute trip. Not very crowded. Great sites but I can see where during peak camping it could be very busy. Very good sites. Bathrooms are flush and very clean. Grea...  more »

  • We drove south on the Oregon Scenic ByWay Hwy 97 through Central Oregon to The Cove Palisades State Park. The small towns, farmers fields and mountain peaks make this a truly scenic drive. The Cove Palisades State Park is a short drive off the hwy 97 with goods signs at every turn. The signs provide a better route then Google maps. The state park is magnificent, but the campground is rather disappointing. It is not located on the water or within easy walking distance. Some beaches are only accessible via steep trails from the parking lots. Too steep for us. It is a 5-mile drive from the campground back to the picnic area with parking level to the beach. There is a resort in the park that is on the water which we wish we had booked instead of the state park campground. There are hiking trails with great views that we enjoyed and one playground at the far end of the campground. Free showers, lots of camp hosts on duty, ice for sale, clean, well managed campground. Lots of sites with power and water plus a dump station nearby. Campsites are narrow with lots of large rocks. Paved pads are pretty level. Road above the canyon has lookouts that are worth a small side trip. Town nearby for supplies.
  • Amazing oasis of water and rock canyons. There is nothing better! Restrooms boat access many picnic tables ..#JustalittleRV fits and we enjoyed our stay for the day.
  • It's a well run, tidy, state park. Plenty of designated swimming areas for the kiddos. Lots of open grassy picnic spots. Boat launches, fishing, water skiing. If you don't have fun here it your own fault. This is a fee park. Boat rentals are spendy.
  • This is a must see for anyone looking to view Oregon's wonderful and beautiful scenery!. The fishing is also very good this time of year!.
  • Awesome place here in the summer would be awesome we came in the spring still raining still fun though caught some lake trout rooster Tails work the best black with yellow spots good luck
