Create an itinerary including Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum and Store
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was formed in 1989 by a group of concerned citizens to heighten awareness about the presence of wild horses in the area. As the Currituck Outer Banks became more and more developed, twenty horses were killed or injured by vehicles on Highway 12. Operating under the Outer Banks Conservationists, Inc., the Corolla Wild Horse Fund worked with Currituck County, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, and the NC Estuarine Research Reserve to have 7,544 acres of the northern-most beaches defined as a horse sanctuary. By 1996, the remaining horses were relocated behind two sound-to-sea fences. However, approximately 70% of the area accessible to the horses is privately owned and there are already 700 homes built and 3,150 platted lots. The horses are not protected by any special state or federal laws but are protected by the Currituck County Wild Horse Ordinance making it illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of a wild horse or to lure, entice, harass or feed. The Fund incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit charity in 2001.

  • The Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum and Store is exactly as it sounds - both a museum and a store. The museum component are 20+ information boards on the walls and a couple of informative videos...

  • 501 C3 operation NOT affiliated with the USDA and any of their shady operations. Dedicated to the preservation of the Corolla Wild Horses descended from the Spanish Mustangs from the 1400's. Staff is very informative. Stop by when you're at the Outer Banks.
  • An amazing place full of knowledge of the wild horses and how to keep them safe. Highly recommend stopping to talk and view the exhibits and support the horses with donations and purchases.
  • Loved it!!! Knowledgeable guide. The horses were beautiful!!!! Wasn't prepared for how rough the ride was lol but other that no complaints.
  • Super friendly folks doing important work to ensure the wild horse population remains an Outer Bank's treasure for future generations. Stop by their museum when you vacay, they are in the historic Corolla village - anything you purchase goes directly into caring for these amazing animals.
  • Very informative, helpful staff. Great Christmas gifts helping support this important historical happening
