Lake Conestee Nature Park, Conestee

4.6
Lake Conestee Nature Park consists of over 400 acres of beautiful natural habitat on the Reedy River just 6 miles south of downtown Greenville, South Carolina. This wildlife sanctuary contains hardwood and mixed forests, extensive wetlands, 3 miles of the Reedy River, and a rich diversity of wildlife habitat. Deer, raccoon, beaver, fox, river otter, and various small mammals inhabit the park, along with numerous species of reptiles and amphibians. As of October 2017, 215 bird species have been reported by the Greenville County Bird Club. The park has over 12 miles of trails and boardwalks, over half of which are wheelchair friendly. LCNP offers nature education programs to schools and other organizations, as well as special Saturday nature programs. The park has been designated as an Important Bird Area of Global Significance by the National Audubon Society. Historic Lake Conestee and the Lake Conestee Dam are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with parts of Conestee Mill.

The Mission of the Conestee Foundation is to sustain the nature park as a sanctuary for humans and wildlife alike, an asset to the Upstate community, an extraordinary green oasis where kids and families can learn about nature, and enjoy the many benefits of being outdoors and active.

  • we've been on the trails at Conestee Park many times. Mostly paved on the main trail, very dog and kid friendly, walking, hiking and bikes all share the same path. There are numerous other paths that ...  more »

  • Reclaimed land converted into a nature park. Every time we go to this park additions and improvements have been made. Great for kids. Opportunities for long term bird watching, which is very relaxing. Take binoculars to watch the herons standing on their nests high in the cypress trees in the water. Easy to walk paths. The signs are a little confusing. It would be great if it could be made possible to continue the walking path across the dam to make one large circuit possible without having to retrace steps. Maybe this is in the "master plan". It all costs money and a tremendous amount has already been spent (invested). I have to believe that the property values for those residential properties on the south-west side (Fork Shoals Road side) have been improved significantly by the development of this park. What has been done thus far is excellent. Great place to bring the dog too, though the grassy areas surrounding the parking lots are dog feces mine fields. But, what can you do?
  • My children and I love to come out to the park on warm and sunny days to breathe in the fresh air, see some tadpoles and look at the beautiful views. I would give this place a GREAT rating for atmosphere. The last time we went, there was a bicycling event going on, and there was limited parking, however, normally parking is widely available.
  • I love talking my family to Lake Conestee Nature Trail! There is so much to see there and it is always changing because the beavers are putting dams up all over. It is fun to see what changes each time we go!
  • This is a very lovely park that is the perfect place to come when you are trying to relax and get away from the hubbub of the city. There are many trails, and I recommend printing out a trail map so that you can see where you can go. Also, there are some paved trails and some natural trails, plus, the swamp rabbit trail runs right through it.
  • Excellent retreat in the update South Carolina area. Load of good walking trails, dog-freindly. An exceptional place to go birding.
