Ohio Statehouse, Columbus

4.5
The Ohio Statehouse, located in Columbus, Ohio, is the house of government for the state of Ohio. The Greek Revival building houses the Ohio General Assembly and the ceremonial offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, and Auditor.HistoryDesign and constructionWhen the state government relocated to the new city of Columbus in 1816, it occupied a modest two-story building on the corner of High and State Streets. This early capitol had chambers for the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate, but the rapid growth and expansion of government functions resulted in overcrowding. Efforts to relieve the cramped quarters with additional small buildings were ineffective and it soon became apparent that the government would require a larger facility. In 1838, Ohio's government announced a competition to select the design for a new Statehouse. This strategy was not unusual at the time, as important public buildings such as the U.S. Capitol had resulted from similar contests. From about fifty entries, three winners were selected: first prize was awarded to Henry Walter of Cincinnati, the second to Martin Thompson of New York, and the third to painter Thomas Cole, also of New York. However, the organizing commission responsible for choosing the winners was unable to agree on a final design for construction.

  • This capital is a little different than others I’ve been to. It doesn’t have an exterior dome, and it’s smaller than those of many other states. As a result, the governor’s office and other department...  more »
  • Had to visit state legislators and went early to tour the capital. Very neat to see the history and the building. Very good gift shop.  more »

  • While I think any statehouse is worth a visit, and we wander the country taking in as many as possible, this is one of the least attractive ones. They host a good landscape/gardens and the flower beds that are planted like OH & US flags are magnificent! Rotunda marble mosaic floor is gorgeous as is the interior of the adjoining building, but the statehouse exterior is plain and the interior color scheme is awful. There is a nice museum in the basement, which used to be the stables. Don't miss the taxidermy pigeon in the connecting arboretum. Someone had a sense of humor.
  • Weekly visits to the State House, meetings with legislators, educating and staying informed. A great place for a casual visit and lunch.
  • I do not know how you review a State Capitol, but I was there for Youth in Government multiple times and it is very functionable, beautiful, accessible, and historical and you can have events held in the Capitol. Can not really complain about anything except that it can sometimes take awhile to get in the Capitol during Youth in Government, but that is only annual and nothing major that would prevent events and what not. A great Capitol over all.
  • We took the free tour and had a great time. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and right on time. Family fun learning time!
  • A nice place to visit it's a very nice building.
