The Mall in Columbia, also known as the Columbia Mall, or The Mall, is the central shopping mall for the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, United States. It has five anchor department stores (Sears, JCPenney, Nordstrom, Macy's, and Lord & Taylor) and over 200 specialty stores. It includes a 14-screen AMC Theatres. The mall is located in the Town Center area of the city and attracts shoppers from surrounding counties in Maryland.HistoryArchitect Frank Gehry designed The Rouse Company Columbia exhibit building, and was initially selected to design the neighboring mall centerpiece. Gehry was later rejected by Rouse for lack of experience, and the firm of Cope, Linder, & Walmsley was contracted for the project. The Mall opened in 1971 with two major anchor stores: Hochschild Kohn's (which was replaced by Hecht's in the mid-1970s) and Woodward & Lothrop (a.k.a. Woodies, which closed in late 1995 and was replaced by JCPenney in July 1996), as well as a McCrory's and Lerner's, which were minor anchors. Howard Research and Development was probed shortly after opening for purchasing bulk energy contracts on electricity while charging market rates to tenants.

  • This is a mall. There are many typical mall things. I think there are more dining options at this mall than most, but you have to go outside to get to them. The Lush store here is very nice, if a litt...  read more »

  • Not much wrong at this mall, its one of the best malls ive been to, just because it has a nice atmosphere and amazing shops and side shops. Its built very nicely and the food court is great, with many options to chose from. I always come here with friends.
  • Enjoyed the movies there. Attendant was very nice and accommodating. She helped fix a mistake i made because of exhaustion night before.
  • I had a problem with a store in The Mall in Columbia back in early May, 2016. Through my own persistence, I was able to resolve my problem to my complete satisfaction. I was able to reach the Corporate Relations Officer of the store, Forever Flawless. Ricki was very helpful, thoughtful, and courteous. I was able to return my merchandise for a full refund. The personnel in the store were very courteous throughout the whole transaction. My opinion of Forever Flawless has changed and I am now much more inclined to use this store in the future.
  • Typical mall you would find anywhere in the country. There is a nice variety of upscale and downscale shopping. The kiosks offer a nice selection of odds and ends. The merchants are not particularly "in your face" like I have experienced before, I do appreciate that. Not sure if that is on purpose or a coincidence. Reasonable selection of food outlets in a very large food court (with an iffy McDonald's). Also a variety of full service restaurants that have something for most. Parking is easy to find and security is very visible. The play area for kids always seems busy.
  • Confusing, amorphous mall that nearly always gets me lost. Very few stores I'm actually interested in and a pain to get to the ones I do want to go to. Parking is atrocious and just plain obnoxious.
