Steptoe Butte State Park Reviews
We called in for a short visit on our way to Colfax. Unfortunately we could not stop for long but will go back again more »
If you are in the Palouse area find time to visit Steptoe Butte state park- basically the butte offers 360 degree views over the Palouse hills. Because of the high viewpoint you can see the rolling hi... more »
A nice drive up the hill though I suspect it might be a bit scary for some (windy and narrow). The view from the top is the best. The highest spot for a long way. more »
Beautiful little state park area out in the middle of nowhere... As you drive by it you think look at that little hill in the middle of a field.. So you turn off the main road and take a short drive up to the top to be blown away by the beauty.. You can look 365 degrees as far as you can see.. Great hill to walk, jog or bike up.. Nice clean restroom up at the top parking lot. Great potty break stop if your traveling through and check out the view
Serene atmosphere surrounded by deep historical and amazing views.. perfect for sunset photography. Often a focus of photography tour groups of the palouse region of Washington state.. also a paraglider and hangglider launch point.. And state park
We were there in the deep winter and it is a wonderful experience.
How big is the Poluse? I don't know, but you can see an awful lot of it from up here.
I took my three young boys (ages 2-11) here on a Thursday morning during summer break. They were a little bored during the 2-hour drive from Spokane (although I thought it was beautiful), but once we started climbing the butte they were captivated by the views. I was pleasantly surprised that we were the only ones at the summit during our entire stay, which was about an hour. We arrived around 11:30, parked at the south end of the viewing area, and set up a picnic blanket just off of the parking area. We enjoyed our lunch in peace and quiet 1,000 feet above the sprawling Palouse. My older boys enjoyed taking pictures and my youngest enjoyed watching the toy-sized tractors working the fields below. If you’re looking for a daytrip from Spokane to get the kids out of the house and away from the video games, Steptoe Butte is a wonderful option. And the kids will learn a bit about geology, too.
