Old Trail Town, Cody

4.5
#1 of 26 in Historic Sites in Wyoming
Historic Site Tourist Spot
See what the stomping grounds of Buffalo Bill Cody and Gen. Custer looked like at Old Trail Town, a reconstructed Old West setting. Although it appears the area was suddenly abandoned, the town was carefully constructed in the 1960s using antique materials collected from the region. Visit the memorial to legendary mountain man Liver-Eating Johnson, and explore the log cabin that belonged to Curly, a Crow Native American scout. Explore the other cabinlike buildings, which are decorated with artifacts to resemble town staples, such as a general store, living quarters, and a school room. A small fee gets you access to the grounds for a self-guided. Old Trail Town is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Cody Edition.

  • A wonder walk through the town. You could feel the essence of the 1800's. The cabins authenticity and attention to details was what made it all the better. I highly recommend visiting.  more »
  • This place is incredible. Do yourself a favour and put this on your MUST SEE places! It is wonderful to see history being saved and preserved! They have collected important old dwellings from the Wild...  more »
  • Great stop to take in some old west history. We stopped here on our first day in Cody. It was $9.00 for the 4 of us to get into this self guided museum of history. It was neat to check out the old hom...  more »

  • I definitely recommend this place. We were traveling from Yellowstone's east gate and wanted something fun to do in Cody. We had seen this place from the road and decided to check it out. The price was reasonable and they gave us a military discount. The pictures at this place all but take themselves. It's so easy to take pictures you'll love to have for years. Not only is the town picturesque, but you have the opportunity to learn so much about the real old west. It made me love Wyoming even more than I already do!
  • Authentic cabins from all over Wyoming. Grave site of Bill Cody and gorgeous views of the mountains in the distance. Lots of history contained in this small village. Affordable and well laid out!
  • Fun to visit! Took lots pics. Also study lots of Cody history! Worth to visit for family.
  • Really interesting historical stop. The cabins and graves were all relocated from other parts of the state.
  • Visiting from Colorado. Excellent job was done here. Really felt like we went back in time. Absolute must see!!

Where to stay in Cody

Cody may be a cowboy town, but its accommodations include everything from plush hotels to modern bed and breakfasts. For an ultimate "Wild West" experience, try to arrange a stay at a rustic mountain cabin or a working ranch just outside the city. If you wish to avoid the crowds or simply need more of your own space, reserve one of the city's Victorian rental homes. Cody's value motels allow you to stay more economically; they make up in mountain views what they lack in amenities.
