Florida Citrus Tower, Clermont

3.2
The Florida Citrus Tower is a 226ft structure in Clermont, Florida. Built in 1956 to allow visitors to observe the miles of surrounding orange groves, it was once among the most famous landmarks of the Orlando area. With the antenna reaching over 500ft above sea level, it remains the highest observation point in Florida, though the view today is mostly of suburban neighborhoods.HistoryConstruction began in 1955, funded by a public sale of stock in the project, conceived by A.W. Thacker and Jack Toole "to showcase the thriving citrus industry," Orlando Weekly wrote in 2005. The project eventually consumed 5 million pounds of concrete and 149,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. The tower opened in 1956 after 13 months of construction. During the first several years of operation, the tower drew up to 500,000 visitors a year, thanks to its location on Highway 27 between Cypress Gardens and Silver Springs. However, in 1964 the Florida Turnpike was extended north, providing a faster route south through Central Florida. Since then the tower has been sold several times. In 1988, a tram was built to offer visitors tours of various citrus crops. The tower was purchased in 1995 by Greg Homan. In early 2015, the Citrus Tower received a new paint job, giving it a new but retro look, with an orange line going down the middle of each side.AttractionThe Citrus Tower includes a wishing well where visitors can hear their coin drop to the bottom; proceeds are donated to the Green Isle Children Ranch. At the lobby is ROOM: Valencia: a banquet facility, gift shop, and museum of the tower's history. During Christmas season, lights on the tower dance to Christmas music. Near the tower is the Presidents Hall of Fame, with wax tributes to 43 Presidents of the United States of America and a full-scale replica of the interior of the White House.

  • Very cool experience, especially if you have been here all your life. if you've been there a couple dozen years ago, and go up now... it might be a little bittersweet.  more »
  • Only $6 to go up per person but worth it. Elevator takes you back into time long ago. The views are interesting trying to get your bearings and figure out what you are looking at from the tower  more »

  • So much history! I lived very close, and worked across the street for many years, always loved the bells. The views from the tower may have drastically changed, but they're still amazing! And at Christmas time, the lights and music show are wonderful ๐Ÿ˜€
  • I can't count how many times I've been here. This place has great history, there's a sweet little gift shop filled with everything citrus!! The price was fantastic, and you won't be disappointed. There's lots if pictures in the lobby of the blueprints and original menus. I wanna say a full bottle of wine was about 50 cents! ๐Ÿ˜‚ there's a small elevator that takes you to the top. Once you're up there, you can see for miles!! The only thing is say is bring a fly swatter or something because there are usually a couple of wasps or something. If you can get past that, you'll have a great time!!
  • Tallest building in the area and a great way to be able to see all the way out to downtown and all around central Florida. During Christmas time they do an amazing light show that's coordinated to music and very high tech. Definitely a cool thing to see if you're in the area.
  • I cannot count the number of times I went to see the Christmas lights this year. The crowds were small, the show was beautiful and my kids loved it! We went up once, at night, and loved the view. The only thing that caused alarm, was that there were a good deal of dead wasps at the top. During the day, thereโ€™s probably live ones flying around. The
  • The views from the top are amazing and well worth the $6/pp. We rode the elevator up to the top and had the entire place to ourselves as it was a random weekday. There was a wall of information on thr ground floor that I wish was at the top. Great little piece of Lake County history. There is also a super cute little gift shop with great trinket-y items. And did I mention the amazing views?!
