Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis is a racing circuit complex in Brownsburg, Indiana. It has a 0.686mi oval, 2.5mi road course, and 4400ft drag strip.HistoryIn 1958, 15 Indianapolis-area businessmen and racing professionals led by Tom Binford, Frank Dickie, Rodger Ward, and Howard Fieber, invested $5,000 each to fund the development of a 267acre farm tract into a recreational sporting complex that would focus on auto racing. The original intention was to create a 15-turn, 2.5mi road course, but as an insurance measure against economic problems, the investment group decided to incorporate a quarter-mile drag strip into the long straightaway of the 2.5mi road course design. Constructed with assistance from the NHRA, the drag strip was the first to be completed, with the facility's first event held on the strip in the fall of 1960. The facility was called Indianapolis Raceway Park. A year later, a 0.686mi paved oval was completed to finish off the track capabilities of the facility. The oval track was used as-is until an overall track renovation was completed in 1988 in order to increase speed on the track. The premier feature of the facility is a 4400ft long dragstrip. The one NHRA event held at Raceway Park is the oldest and most prestigious race in the NHRA. The NHRA U.S. Nationals, held every year during the Labor Day weekend, is the only event on the NHRA schedule with final eliminations scheduled on a Monday. An all-star style race, called the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, is held for the two nitro divisions (Top Fuel on Saturday and Funny Car on Sunday). The winners in each division win $100,000 US, while the race itself has the largest purse of any NHRA sanctioned event at over $250,000 US. The drag strip has held the event every year since 1961, when the race was moved from Detroit.

  • Used to be such a fun place to watch a race. But now, no one goes there. Grandstands torn down on each end of the racetrack, which is a good thing, because no one was at the last race there. VERY disa...  more »

  • Lucas Oil Raceway, formerly known as Indianapolis Raceway Park, is one of the most exciting racing venues anywhere. And for an all-day adult admission to the NHRA US Nationals on Labor Day Weekend @ around $55 which also is a pit pass - there is no better value for your racing dollar - period. Try standing behind a Top Fuel Dragster in the pits when the crew fires it up. Or get an autograph and your picture taken with a legend like John Force! And he doesn't just sign one or two. At some point during the weekend all racers will be found accessible to fans. By chance a few years ago my on, who was about 12 at the time, we wondering around on the west side of the track and randomly saw none other than Bid Daddy Don Garlits at a Mopar trailer. Talked with him, got a picture of him with my son - fan interaction with legends is unsurpassed. So what if they charge a few bucks to park - you can co back and forth to your car all day long. Plus they have shuttles to and from the parking lot. Want to go fire up your grill and have a few cold beers for lunch - no problem. Easily the best racing venue and racing experience.
  • Been here several times over the years as a spectator and as a participant. This is a huge venue and provides great views from the stands and good facilities to race in.
  • It's always fun watching the US nationals there, there's so much to do around the track, encourage everyone to visit.
  • Finally had my Rusty Wallace ride along and driving experience at Lucas Oil Raceway (the weather in Indiana is not always nice on the weekends). The staff was friendly and helpful and the whole experience went smoothly (I would love to have more signs indicating where to check-in and start the experience for the first timers). The race track and cars seemed to be in a good condition (some cars didn't have gear shifting instruction stickers inside, but it's easy to memorize 2 gears). I raced with a professional driver to learn and then I got to race a 400 HP car on my own for 10 laps. Pushed a little bit over the limit and side slipped in the corner but took control and got back on track while passing the other guy. I couldn't imagine getting in and out of the car would be a science yet shifting was very easy (if you're used to manual shifting though). It is hard to put all the emotions I have in a text. I highly recommend everyone to try if you have a chance. I'd love to go again next year. You can get a good deal on holidays!
  • SLAMOLOGY IS BOSS!!! Anyone can go, and and super great fun time! :)
