Sand Key Park, Clearwater

4.5
#5 of 82 in Things to do in Clearwater
Nature / Park
As the home of an artificial reef, Sand Key Park provides opportunities for scuba diving and fishing. Manmade materials are placed in the water and marine life takes over--barnacles and algae attach themselves and turn the underwater area into a haven for fish and other animals. A salt marsh further enhances the experience, bringing in herons, pelicans, roseate spoonbills and other birds to the area. Look for seashells in the shallow waters, which abound in this environment. You can reserve a picnic shelter with a grill, and there's a playground at the site. Check out kayak and bicycle rental options for exploring the sea or trails along the coast. Dog owners can take their furry friends to a special designated park for dogs. Our Clearwater itinerary builder makes visiting Sand Key Park and other Clearwater attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Where to stay in Clearwater

If you come to Clearwater to enjoy the weather and explore the beaches, choose one of the city's five-star beachfront resorts. You can also stay close to the water while on holiday by booking your stay at one of the city's "condotels," where you can have all the expected amenities of a hotel with an added bonus of your own kitchen. Alternatively, you can also choose a more affordable old-Florida style beach motel or quaint bed and breakfast, providing all the comforts of home at the fraction of the cost charged by the big-name resorts.

  • Prefect place to relax and unwind. Well kept in all areas of the park. I come here as much as l can. Big shelters, nice playground for the kids, bathroom 🚻 and showers to rinse off when you get out of the beautiful water. Where it is almost never crowded. In my opinion the best in Clearwater areas! Nice clean Grill areas for cooking.
  • This is one of our favorite spots in Pinellas County. The park (playground/shelter) areas are really nice and well kept. The dog park is nice but it does get stinky when it rains. I recommend a beach caddy if you are a family going for the day. The walk out to the water is a little far but you really can't beat the sunsets there. It's gets deeper faster than other near by beaches. Also be careful of rip currents due to the change in currents at the inlet to the inter-coastal. We go there often and it can be very romantic!
  • This park was beautiful. Send was mostly shells so if you're visiting, take a chair to sit in. Water is amazing, mostly clear, and warm. The seagulls... super funny and a lil aggressive if they know you have food. Shower area on the walk back to your car. Many points of entry to the beach. Parking was just 5$.
  • Really nice little beach area. Definitely worth the few dollars you have to pay for parking compared to a lot of the other areas near the main city. This place is much more quiet and secluded so if you're looking for a quieter place to spend the afternoon on the beach this is a great spot!
  • Absolutely beautiful water, different shades of blue and right now it's the perfect temperature. Good parking lot with bathrooms and spacious changing rooms. Lovely shells and sand and it wasn't too crowded ( even though its Friday and summer break ). I think of it as a sort of hidden gem. I'll be back.
