Sand Key Park, Clearwater

4.5
#3 of 10 in Parks in Clearwater
As the home of an artificial reef, Sand Key Park provides opportunities for scuba diving and fishing. Manmade materials are placed in the water and marine life takes over--barnacles and algae attach themselves and turn the underwater area into a haven for fish and other animals. A salt marsh further enhances the experience, bringing in herons, pelicans, roseate spoonbills and other birds to the area. Look for seashells in the shallow waters, which abound in this environment. You can reserve a picnic shelter with a grill, and there's a playground at the site. Check out kayak and bicycle rental options for exploring the sea or trails along the coast. Dog owners can take their furry friends to a special designated park for dogs. Put Sand Key Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Clearwater trip itinerary builder website .

  • I was so excited to find and take my dog to this park. We had so much fun interacting with the other dogs and the people UNTIL the past week. Unfortunately a couple of large dogs have wanted to play in the small dog area. The problem is some of the small dogs have been "bumped" by the larger breeds and have gotten hurt. Not only dogs have been "bumped" but an owner of a small dog was knocked to the ground by a large dog. Now the small dog owners have requested the rules be followed as to the large dogs stay in the area posted for them. This has caused much anger by a few individuals that do not like to have rules to follow. So until the anger calms down and the rules are followed I think this park may be good to avoid.
  • I haven't been to many beaches around Florida but this one wasn't anything special. The sand wasn't messy which is cool but it was kind of hard and seemed to just leave a white powdery residue more than anything else. There were so many birds pooping and attacking you for food. Also, there seemed to be sand spurs almost everywhere so walking barefoot was quickly a No-no. once i was in the water I was able to have a good time. If friend were here I'd go with precaution But if i had a choice I'd go somewhere else. Not a fan of this beach.
  • Very nice property with many showers, bathrooms, and dressing rooms. The lack of shade from natural trees make the park seem man made in a way. The lack of BBQ grills are a turn off, but they probably better off since many inconsiderate persons cannot seem to clean up after themselves. Since the beach is in an inlet, the water gets quite warm in the middle of the summer. Personally, the best time to visit is March to May, and late September to November. Even the warmer days of our FL winters are worth enjoying at this specific spot. If you come from far, there are a few nice hotels nearby, including across the street.
  • Reasonably priced parking for a day at the beach. Clean beach, not super soft sand but very clean. Nice bathroom/shower facilities in main part, smaller shower near access points. Great for families
  • Always available affordable parking. 5 dollars for the whole day. Family friendly beach. Life guard on duty. Right by the departure point for all charter boats, kids can see the pirate ship and parasails going to sea.
