Mitchel at the peak of Mount Ida, a hill that overlooks downtown Cincinnati. Nicholas Longworth donated 4acre of land for the purpose. The Holy Cross Monastery and Chapel stands today at the site. The cornerstone was laid on November 9, 1843, and presiding over the occasion was former President John Quincy Adams, with an introduction by Judge Jacob Burnet. At 77 years old, it was to be his last public speech, and Mount Ida was renamed to Mount Adams in his honor.

  • What a great place for history and astronomy. Saturn through the telescope is amazing.
  • We showed up in the middle of the day and the guy welcomed us in. He showed us the antique telescope and let us rotate the dome on the top of the observatory. He told all of the history and gave us his undivided attention. Great thing to do when looking for stuff to do in Cincinnati!
  • Our family had a great night out. The lecture time was just the right mix of cool pictures & science for the kids. We had a somewhat poor weather night which the docent filled with great stuff until it cleared up to see the stars.
