It consists of two observatory buildings housing an 11 inch (28 cm) and 16 inch (41 cm) aperture refracting telescope. It is the oldest professional observatory in the United States. It was a key facility for astronomical research and education at the University of Cincinnati and currently operates as a 19th-century observatory. There are regular viewings through both historical telescopes as well as tours and additional programs. The observatory also has an extensive outreach program, providing astronomical education for the Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana region. The Cincinnati Observatory is a contributing property to the Observatory Historic District.HistoryCincinnati Observatory was built by Ormsby M. Mitchel at the peak of Mount Ida, a hill that overlooks downtown Cincinnati. Nicholas Longworth donated 4acre of land for the purpose. The Holy Cross Monastery and Chapel stands today at the site. The cornerstone was laid on November 9, 1843, and presiding over the occasion was former President John Quincy Adams, with an introduction by Judge Jacob Burnet. At 77 years old, it was to be his last public speech, and Mount Ida was renamed to Mount Adams in his honor.

  • An antique telescope, unique antiques and artifacts, and a wonderful guide! A must visit while in Cincinnati! And ask about their events. What a fun place to visit and a true Cincinnati gem!
  • Very cool place. The staff was very friendly and informative. They showed us both telescopes.
  • What a great place for history and astronomy. Saturn through the telescope is amazing.
  • We showed up in the middle of the day and the guy welcomed us in. He showed us the antique telescope and let us rotate the dome on the top of the observatory. He told all of the history and gave us his undivided attention. Great thing to do when looking for stuff to do in Cincinnati!
  • There is a modern and antique telescope here. The antique telescope has been fully restored and is the oldest in the nation. It is also one of the oldest in the world. Our family really enjoyed rhe event called "Jupiter Nights". With the antique telescope we could see Jupiter and each of it's moons. Great fun, come see this hidden gem in Cincinnati. Sign up and or show up early, some events can be popular.
