Swedish American Museum is a museum of Swedish American topics and the Swedish emigration to the United States, located in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.

The Swedish American Museum in Chicago was founded by Kurt Mathisson in 1976. It moved to its current location on 5211 North Clark Street in 1987. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden was present at the museum's founding and at its move to its new home. The museum is housed in a 24,000-square-foot (2,200 m2), three-story building and has a collection of approximately 12,000 objects. It is a core member of the Chicago Cultural Alliance, a consortium of 25 ethnic museums and cultural centers in Chicago.

The iconic water tower above the museum was removed on March 20, 2014, after being damaged during the harsh winter.

  • A small, but very well put together museum honoring both the Swedish culture, and the journey the Swedes took to the New World. Very educational, and had a great time. Excited to see the remodel this upcoming January!
  • Saw A Little Night of Nordic Music here. It was amazing! I can't wait to come again next year. The venue is lovely. The performances were breathtaking! You've gotta check it out!
  • This place is such a gem for families with small children. The play area reminds me slightly of WonderWorks over on North Avenue, but it's so much closer to our house and just the right size for a long lazy afternoon. It's always so delightful to see children engaged in imaginative play, a great place for parents to chill out while we smirk watching our children plant, farm, and tend to the homestead.
  • We were greeted by an super friendly and helpful lady at the front desk. The exhibits and their descriptions were very well built and maintained. It amazes me how well the space was used to convey a story that dates back a 100 years or so. Thank you for the hospitality!!
  • A great institution to visit, explore and cherish, for those with Scandinavian heritage or those interested in exploring the history of immigrants to Chicago and America.
