Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago

The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Holy Name Cathedral is the center of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas-relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar, the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations, the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass, as well as other events. If you're interested in mob history, you can see bullet marks on the building from the 1926 assassination of Hymie Weiss, one of Chicago's heavy hitters from the Prohibition era. • Visiting and praying inside. Even it did not turn on light, but I can see the big, tall architecture of the cathedral when we visited 3 days in Chicago, IL. It is 1-minute walk from Chicago subway...  more »
  • Even if you’re not a religious person (I’m not), this building can be enjoyed. The ceiling is absolutely stunning! If you only go for that, it’s worth it, but the rest of the cathedral is also...  more »
  • Lovely church just a short train ride north from downtown. We enjoyed the services on Sunday morning.  more »
  • The Holy Name Cathedral church is a beautiful church. The architecture is just amazing and beautiful. I would recommend that you stop by and visit if you’re in Chicago. For those that live in Chicago you are lucky. We were visiting from out of state and lit some candles for some family and friends. Will stop by again when it down.
  • Beautiful cathedral. Located in the middle of downtown Chicago. Architecture and decor breath taking. Ceilings decorated with painted scenes from the Bible and adorned with more intricate Woodwork including the Columns. Floors granite. Woodwork compliments the suspended Wooden cross of Jesus over the sacrament table. Downstairs has meeting rooms and restrooms. A must see the next.
  • Beautiful from outside but very little inside was inspiring or uniquely Catholic. Very strange to be in a Cathedral and not find statues or artwork of the Blessed Mother or saints. Modern/abstract stained glass not Christian imagery but just colorful patterns. Altar was sparse with wood paneling. Could not find tabernacle. It struck me as a very nice Protestant church.
  • Beautiful cathedral. Lots of times available for mass. There is also a quiet courtyard with tables & chairs for peaceful reflection.
  • Beautiful church! Great homily. Very good experience.
