Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Holy Name Cathedral is the center of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas-relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar, the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations, the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass, as well as other events. If you're interested in mob history, you can see bullet marks on the building from the 1926 assassination of Hymie Weiss, one of Chicago's heavy hitters from the Prohibition era. • Well worth a visit. Can't hold a candle to European churches or Spanish cathedrals but in America a beautiful church.

  • We enjoyed viewing the beautiful windows and architecture of this building. It appears to be a vibrant church community.
  • The archbishop is very liberal and very disappointing . He needs to read the catechism of the catholic church. Archbishop Cupich is causing so much confusion among the faithful. People cannot follow their conscience if their conscience is not well formed. A well-formed conscience is rooted in the truth of Jesus Christ! It is the job of the real shepherds of God to catechize His people. Hosea 4:6 states: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you for being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of you God, I also will forget your children.
  • This place is huge and spacious and has normal mass times. From the inside to the outside, the architecture of this building is beautiful and is as good as it gets. It's also located in a convenient location, being on the near north side, only steps away from the Chicago Red Line stop. There are also lots of things nearby if you're waiting for service to start or want to go somewhere after. There are numerous brunch places nearby and the Hancock building is only a few blocks east.
  • Archbishop Cupich is a very progressive liberal. He does not embrace the true teachings of the church. He has brought a lot of confusion. Very sad.
  • I love the clergy and the organ, and the choirs are beautiful. The cathedral itself is amazing and beautiful. The Archbishop of Chicago is a great blessing to our city.
  • I went there for my Confirmation and it was wonderful. Really beautiful architect!!! Feel really peaceful!
