Create an itinerary including Holy Name Cathedral
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, Holy Name Cathedral is the center of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas-relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar, the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations, the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass, as well as other events. If you're interested in mob history, you can see bullet marks on the building from the 1926 assassination of Hymie Weiss, one of Chicago's heavy hitters from the Prohibition era. Check online for the full schedule of masses. See Holy Name Cathedral and all Chicago has to offer by arranging your trip with our Chicago trip builder site.

  • Absolutely beautiful Roman Catholic Church in the heart of downtown Chicago. We were here for a wedding and the sound system was excellent, the priest and cantor did a wonderful job and of course hearing the hundred + year old organ really brought back memories of midnight mass! The parish staff that were there to help with the wedding guests were very nice and welcoming. A lovely church and we definitely plan to attend a weekend Mass here again.
  • One of the most impressive Cathedrals I've visited in the US. Not that big, but amazingly beautiful - fantastic stone exterior, wood interior is mind blowing along with fantastic stained glass in Gothic style.
  • My gosh such a wonderful Cathedral! The architecture is just a sight to see .... Massive arches and an aura of peace and timelessness. I visited during Open House Chicago and I'm happy I did!
  • Beautiful church! Mass was also beautiful except for the part that Eucharistic Ministers don’t even want to give the Eucharist on the tongue. If you are someone that kneels before the Lord and receives on the tongue, I recommend going to the priest’s line. I was also confused that the Ushers at the end of mass said “Thanks for praying with us.” It kind of reminded me of a non denominational church greeting. It made it seem as if we didn’t just see the body and blood of Jesus Christ present. Mass is more than just praying, it’s the perfect form of worship.
  • Sadly we came from Huntington Beach California to visit our granddaughter.I caught COVID 3days after arriving. Out her window I see this beautiful Cathedral. I will get in there- so close yet so far away!
