Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago

4.7
#4 of 28 in Museums in Chicago
A landmark building and the nation’s first free municipal cultural center, Chicago Cultural Center hosts music, dance and theater performances, films, lectures, art exhibits, and family events throughout the year. Completed in 1897, the building was designed in a generally neoclassical style with Italian Renaissance elements. The cultural center offers much to admire, including Roman arches, Cosmati walls, grand marble staircases, and a richly decorated Civil War memorial. Don’t miss Preston Bradley Hall, which features glass mosaics and the largest Tiffany glass dome in the world with approximately 30,000 glass pieces. Check online to see what events are running during your visit. The building also houses a visitor information center, which makes it a great first stop on your Chicago journey. • Every Wednesday they have a free concert at the noon hour. It's called the Dame Myra Hess series. If you're in the Chicagoland area make sure in hit one of them. It is tremendous. Located in the Old Chicago downtown public library at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street. The building is well worth the visit alone. Mini of the decorations we're done by LC Tiffany. They will give tours of the building also.
  • Beautiful excibition space 🎨. The architecture is gorgeous. It is open for long hours, and free! It is amazing. Cultural Center was established at 1897. Inside the building has the grand staircase that lead to the Preston Bradley Hall. Tall windows and artwork are magnificent. The Tiffany ceiling is gorgeous! 38 feet round dome is the largest Tiffany glass dome in the world.
  • This is an excellent diamond in the rough across from Millennium Park. Oh, and It's Free! So if you have friends and/or family coming in from out of town, this is an excellent out of the way tourist spot. The Tile work and Tiffany dome (the largest in North America I believe) is eye catching and stunning. Being the old Chicago Library (1897) it still has the names of the old poets from history on the walls and makes a fantastic backdrop for pictures. It is also a great spot to get free booklets of what is happening in the city and surrounding areas. I usually drop by when they have been exhibiting art on the upper floors, it is usually international or eccentric work you won't see anywhere else. So I highly recommend checking it out when downtown Chicago.
  • Great exhibitions, and always free. The place also offers free wifi if you want to hang out and get some stuff done. Also, the building is probably one of the most beautiful ones in the entire Chicago Downtown. Always worth a stop on your Michigan Avenue Shopping Safari.
  • One of my favorite places to visit in downtown Chicago. They always have such interesting art exhibits. The building itself is a marvel in architecture. You can come in relax from a hectic day of shopping, grab a drink and pastry from the cafe and find out about events in the tourist center. Free performances, quiet room to read, what more could you want? What a great place to stop in! #CityExperts @GoogleLocalCHI

Where to stay in Chicago

The Midwest's major center for business conventions, Chicago boasts many affordable places to stay, with most hotels located around the airport and the city's central business district. To discover the city from a comfortable base within walking distance of most tourist attractions, aim for one of the big chain hotels in the downtown area. If you're traveling on a limited budget and wish to get a deeper sense of Chicago's many diverse neighborhoods, consider staying away from the pricey city center and explore suburbs on a commuter train line for easy city access.
