Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago

#4 of 48 in Museums in Chicago
A landmark building and the nation’s first free municipal cultural center, Chicago Cultural Center hosts music, dance and theater performances, films, lectures, art exhibits, and family events throughout the year. Completed in 1897, the building was designed in a generally neoclassical style with Italian Renaissance elements. The cultural center offers much to admire, including Roman arches, Cosmati walls, grand marble staircases, and a richly decorated Civil War memorial. Don’t miss Preston Bradley Hall, which features glass mosaics and the largest Tiffany glass dome in the world with approximately 30,000 glass pieces. Check online to see what events are running during your visit. The building also houses a visitor information center, which makes it a great first stop on your Chicago journey. • Free access and not overly busy. I enjoyed the mosaic flooring and the climbing board walk art piece in the court yard. The music section was interesting and fun watching kids try to use the old schoo...  more »

  • Beautiful building... This was originally the Chicago Public Library, built with international donations after the Chicago fire, and filled with books gifted from other English-speaking countries. It is a great place to check out if you want an art fix on your lunch break, or if you are a tourist looking for sightseeing advice. The building itself is worth a look, as it is beautiful. Weddings are performed here by the Marriage Court judges on Fridays, if you've always wanted to be a wedding crasher.
  • Beautiful building full of history. I love that they offer different tours. We did the one that took you through the cultural center and around the city. It was informative and exciting to get history behind all the buildings on the way. I would recommend doing the tour and going back on your own and checking the building out at your own pace. There's so much to see you can easily spend a day there.
  • We absolutely enjoyed our time visiting the Chicago Cultural Center. I would say that this is a magnificent Hidden Gem in a very busy bustling section of downtown Chicago on Michigan Avenue. We loved learning about the beautiful Tiffany stained glass mosaics, and found the staff very welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed looking at the smaller exhibits on the other floors including specific artists and their view of Chicagoland ecosystem and nature. I highly recommend to Chicago Cultural Center to anybody wanting to see a beautiful place in the heart of Chicago's downtown.
  • One of the most beautiful places I visited was actually the Chicago Cultural Center. It's a free building to enter and explore and the architecture and everything inside it is just beautiful. It's definitely something to look at. There was even an art exhibit going on at the time, featuring Keith Haring, whose work I recognize all over NYC. They had an art table set up for you to draw your own art and stick it on the wall.
  • Cool place! It's always free and a perfect place to do work or get out of the summer heat for a bit. Facilities are clean and well stocked. Not a lot of exhibits. The entire museum can be seen in 1-2 hrs. Nice for a quick trip, but don't plan your day around going to this museum. You'll have a short day.
