Buckingham Fountain, Chicago

4.5
One of the largest fountains in the world, Buckingham Fountain was built in 1927. Taking its inspiration from the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, the attraction features an ornate Rococo style. Designed to represent Lake Michigan, each seahorse that decorates the fountain symbolizes its bordering states. Every hour on the hour for 20 minutes the fountain produces a water display, with the center jets shooting 45.7 m (150 ft) into the air. The fountain also features other colored light shows. • Was excited to hear this fountain was used in the opening credits of the series Married with Children. Especially as we were such avid watchers of this show.  more »
  • With their play of light and architecture, a place to dream in Grant Park. It is big enough to walk, it requires good legs!

  • A great place to visit. Loved the lights. So many people from all parts of the world. One of the best places in Chicago for a backdrop to a wedding party, graduation shoot or just a pic with friends or family. A must see before you leave Chicago. Not your every day fountain.
  • Really peaceful and great view of the city. We came in winter so it was also full of snow but the fountain was drained out. We were also the only ones around so that was alright. Could see how this would be beautiful outside of winter though
  • Such a beautiful place! The fountain it's much more beautiful during the night. My family and I went to Chicago two years ago and this fountain it's definitely a place to go when you visit this city. My kids loved it. They really enjoyed it. When we where there I was taking pictures when suddenly a man approach me and asked me if I could do a favor to him. He asked me if I could take a video, he was going to propose to his girlfriend! The lady didn't know anything about it, it was going to be a surprise for her! She thought I was taking a picture of them, but when the man kneeled in front of her she just started to cry! It was really touching. She said yes of course. It was very romantic and the fountain made the perfect background. Well, that was my experience at the beautiful fountain in Chicago. We enjoyed every minute we spent there with the family. The weather was just perfect, not hot and not cold. We went during the last days of summer and it was the perfect time of the year. We could walk and visit all the nice places in the city. We are definitely going back again and of course we will visit the fountain again!
  • Very nice and beautiful water fountain. Walking distance from millennium park Chicago. Specially go in the evening when light comes up at that it will be amazing .
  • Excellent tourist location we went at the end of July and it was not too crowd. We used a bicycle taxis for my parents to move about the large garden area it was excellent. They have some people there that sold water and ice cream which was perfect on a hot day. Great thing about chicago is that it's windy so you don't really feel the heat. Take out half a day and start at this fountain and walk through the park area northwards toward the bean and in that same area there are some great restaurants and Cindy's for a drink!

Where to stay in Chicago

The Midwest's major center for business conventions, Chicago boasts many affordable places to stay, with most hotels located around the airport and the city's central business district. To discover the city from a comfortable base within walking distance of most tourist attractions, aim for one of the big chain hotels in the downtown area. If you're traveling on a limited budget and wish to get a deeper sense of Chicago's many diverse neighborhoods, consider staying away from the pricey city center and explore suburbs on a commuter train line for easy city access.
