Cheyenne Depot Museum, Cheyenne

Specialty Museum Museum
The Cheyenne Union Pacific Railroad Depot Museum is located on the south side of 15th Street, at the intersection with Capitol Avenue. The Depot is located—naturally enough—alongside the still-active tracks of the Union Pacific, America’s first transcontinental railroad, in the heart of Cheyenne’s central business district. No longer used as a passenger facility, it sits on the northern side of the railroad’s mainline tracks, and forms the visual cornerstone for downtown Cheyenne. Located on the site of the first Cheyenne Depot, a wood frame building constructed in 1867, the Depot is one of the downtown’s two most significant landmarks. The Depot is prominently placement at one end of Capital Avenue, opposite the Wyoming State Capitol; Cheyenne’s other major historical landmark.

  • During Frontier Days there is a lot of activity downtown. The rest of the year not so much, but the Depot Museum has some neat Wyoming history.  more »
  • This old working station has a limited special from Cheyenne and Denver. The experience is average but this is not a great place to spend time. Better place to buy stuff.  more »

  • Very nice facility. Tons of history and information to read up on regarding the trains. Unfortunately there are relatively no real trains to look at. I was told that UP still owns the round house which is why no one is allowed to go look them. Would have got 5 stars had they actually had trains around to look at.
  • if you are walking by it's worth popping into and it a main fixture of downtown as it centers around the depot and this seems to be a major attraction for the area. The entire area/campus is pretty nice with several placards set-up to help inform about the history of the area.
  • A throwback to the era of steam locomotives. A must-see for all you train buffs out there, especially those enchanted with steam engines, like my father. Coordinate your visit with a tour of the UP steam shop, where they are currently restoring a Big Boy, and also house a Challenger. Unfortunately we did not see the steam shop as tours are very limited and sell out months in advance. You can get tour info directly from the depot museum web site. It was still worth the visit to the museum, even if you can't coordinate a steam shop tour. A bonus can be found just about a mile away where a Big Boy is on display outdoors at Holliday Park in Cheyenne. A great experience!
  • History of the trains, Depot and other interesting stuff. Nice place to walk leisurely and stretch your legs after a long drive. Family friendly.
  • Very informative museum, but kind of small. The model train set upstairs was very interesting, but would have been better if the train was on and running.
