In 1923, a group of citizens founded the Chatham Historical Society to preserve the history of Chatham; one of Cape Cod's earliest fishing villages. In fact, Samuel Champlain made landfall in Chatham in 1606! There is a stone marker commemorating this event near Stage Harbor. The Society's headquarters is the Atwood House& Museum complex - featuring the historic home owned by Captain Joseph Atwood which was built in 1752. The institution also features a comprehensive archives & research facility, A China trade gallery, A Chatham fishing gallery, The Stallknecht Mural Barn, The Joseph C. Lincoln gallery, and much more.Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Chatham trip simple and quick.

Great little museum of local history, and a fantastic short guided tour of the old house by volunteer Barbara, who also gave us some good ideas of other things to do on the Cape.

Beautiful historic home! So many interesting things about the people who owned it and the surrounding area! Tour guides are very nice and informative. So amazing to hear the stories and see how they lived! Will definitely come back to see this place. Well worth the trip!

Lovely day learning about the history of Chatham. Beautiful museum. Fine docents, too. Thank you all!

Ned was very knowledgeable on the guided tour. Lots of great history in the exhibits, not just of Chatham but of much of Cape Cod. The interactive portions of the exhibits were fun, too!

Great staff people, some with roots going back to the 1630's.

Incredible historical site. The tour is informative and tells of great ideas they had in the past to get by. Did u know there is a secret sliding whole in the stairs that leads to the basement, and they would put the cat in the whole and he would stay a few days in the basement and catch and eat the mice! It kept the cats belly full as well! Antiques galore too. It is a labor of love for the volunteers who run it. There's even a fishing cottage showing how the fishers lived. A must see!
