  • When our Olli classes were scheduled to meet at Michie Tavern with linch included we couldn't pass it up. As always the menu includes their famous, and deservedly so, fried chicken. What we didn't kno...  more »
  • convenient to Monticello; fried chicken is WONDERFUL; other food offerings, esp. vegetables, very good. Setting is comfortable; wait staff is very good. Just a bit pricey, however.  more »
  • If you are in the area it is worth a visit to Michie Tavern for the fried chicken. The service is good too. But, it does feel a little like a tourist trap. We were glad we went after visiting Monticel...  more »

  • Go for the experience. Quaint and historic. It is a buffet type, but selections are limited. Don't expect options like the big chain buffets. Don't worry about salt and calories. Leave those concerns at the door and enjoy and just eat light the following days. Fireplace is nice in late fall and winter. Food is tasty. Cost a little more than it should be so would not be a regular stop, but worth including in the tourist things be it museum, apple orchard or shopping. Friendly staff and patrons
  • This is a Historic tavern with what was described as the best friend chicken you would ever eat. The photos on their website show it being served on pewter plates. The staff were courteous and refilled drinks whenever needed. But our dining experience was not a sit down dinner, but a cafeteria with a tray line in somewhat cramped quarters. Was it the best friend chicken we'd ever had like others claimed? We'd have to say it was very good, but not the best we have ever tasted. Even though it was afternoon, it was very dimly lit in the dining room. Perhaps to give you the feel of an 1800s dining experience. The property also contains can interesting firearms shop and other antique items and a well stocked gift shop. Definitely something to experience at least once.
  • Looked interesting but hours were very strange; only 11:30 to 3. Maybe it's because of winter but don't know. The antique weapons store is fascinating though!
  • I can't believe that my husband and I have been living in the Charlottesville area for 5 months now and this was the first time I had visited the Michie Tavern. My parents were in town visiting and we decided to visit the Michie Tavern for the ambiance and to see what little treasures we could find. The workers are so friendly and very informative. This place is adorable and bursting with history. I cannot wait to go back and visit with my husband.
  • This is the real thing - a wonderful historic experience! The whole package - restaurant, shops, and tours. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly. The food is served from a short and efficient cafeteria line then servers will bring more of anything you like to your table. The menu is basic southern comfort food and it's good! Great fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, beets, soups, rolls, and cornbread. Vegetarian beans and black eyed peas are available on request, beets already are. The prices are very reasonable (vegetarian is less). Fixed price, all you can eat. A few bottled local beers available along with a cider and a root beer. The atmosphere is immersive, warm, and historic with real candles and wood burning fireplaces. Just a few minutes away from Monticello. This is a great addition to a trip to Monticello or a stop on the way to Williamsburg.

Where to stay in Charlottesville

Hotels and inns in Charlottesville's lively downtown area offer proximity to the city's main attractions, but they can be on the expensive side. There are several more inexpensive options located along or near Emmet Street, which is a short drive from the main thoroughfare. Alternatively, immerse yourself in local history by staying at a centuries-old bed and breakfast. Many of these establishments are complete with fine period furnishings.
