Michie Tavern, located in Albemarle County, Virginia, is a Virginia Historic Landmark that was established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie, though in Earlysville. The Tavern served as the social center of its community and provided travelers with food, drink and lodging. It remained in operation, in the Michie family, until 1910, when it came to be owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1927, the Tavern was purchased by the Josephine Henderson, who had it moved seventeen miles from Earlysville to its present location, close to Monticello. The tavern is proximal to several other notable historic attractions: Monticello Ash Lawn-Highland University of Virginia

  • Charming building both inside and out. Should have checked out the place before eating there. It is cafeteria style and while they do a very good job of moving people through it is best advised not to...  read more »
  • We had a great time here after our tour of Monticello. Just the perfect amount of history to complement our experience, and the food was great. The kids loved it, too.
  • After leaving Monticello we scooted along to the Michie Tavern for lunch - luckily they serve until about 2.30pm. The deal here is that for a fixed price you help yourself to a buffet which (we were t...  read more »
  • Can I give less than 1 star? This place is a tourist attraction near Monticello (which is wonderful). There is a reason there are no pictures of the dining hall or happy diners on the website. It is a cafeteria - with public school (I went to public school) quality food. There's a weird system of getting the food and getting refills - you go through the line once and then they bring you refills. They super over charge for the food - $18 - unless you can eat a lot - not a good value. Kids seem to like it. Not a tavern.
  • We were recommended to go to Michie Tavern by the Charlottesville Visitor Center. We were a bit underwhelmed by the overall experience. We weren't originally told that it was a buffet and we probably wouldn't have gone if we knew it was $18/person as neither my wife nor I eat a lot of food. The food, however, was pretty good (even though there are limited options). The staff was super friendly and helpful. They are very attentive to your needs at the table and offered many times to get us a second plate or drink refills. We also enjoyed the atmosphere before heading to Monticello. A good stop if you're not concerned with price or if you're really hungry and can destroy a buffet!
  • The pulled pork is superb, and the staff were quite friendly. Overall though, it felt like an 18th century cafeteria where the gift shops were more the emphasis than any historical aspects of the building (which, is not even on the original site of the structure). I may go back for special events, but once was about enough for me, especially given the price for a meal, beer, and dessert (~$25/person).
  • Wonderful place to visit!! Miss Teresa was an absolute joy during our tour of the old tavern. She is such a sweet lady and really made our visit special. She made a sweet gesture for our son for his 13th birthday that was falling on the day after our visit. This will be something that he will remember forever and I hope she knows how much it meant to my son. Its easy to tell she loves what she does! The ladies working in the artillery and silver shops were wonderful and kind as well. Just an all around wonderful place. We had a late lunch at the tavern. They had the best fried chicken that I believe I've ever had! I was too full to eat the dessert, I hear the peach cobbler is wonderful. Great meal!!
  • Wow. Just wow. I had the privilege of coming here as part of a private event in the evening. We were treated to an incredible buffet which included the Tavern's famous fried chicken. I don't think I'll be able to have fried chicken anywhere else again. It was juicy, yet crunchy, and full of flavor. The sides which included mashed potatoes, biscuits, and more, were all excellent as well.
