Where to stay in Charlottesville

Hotels and inns in Charlottesville's lively downtown area offer proximity to the city's main attractions, but they can be on the expensive side. There are several more inexpensive options located along or near Emmet Street, which is a short drive from the main thoroughfare. Alternatively, immerse yourself in local history by staying at a centuries-old bed and breakfast. Many of these establishments are complete with fine period furnishings.

  • Filled with artists' studios, most of which are open and friendly during the First Friday's art openings. I almost always find their main gallery to have a great show as well. On those First Fridays, ...  more »
  • This is not a museum in my opinion. It is a very old and dirty school with "starving" artists. You walk in and there is no one to greet you or give you guidance. There are no instructions on where you...  more »
  • Love exploring this wonderful Art Center! My 6 year old daughter took Clay for Kids and LOVED it! Fantastic. Love meeting local artists and learning about their work while waiting for her class. Fanta...  more »

  • I Go one Frist Fridays. They have special guest artist, food and wine. You can look or buy, sometimes they have free gifts.
  • Great opportunity to meet real people who make real art. Art that is accessible to a philistine like me, because the artists at McGuffey are excellent teachers as well. I've learned about glass-blowing from Chip Hall and have seen photographic artist Scott Smith manipulate light & shadow using the simplest tools to produce the most elegant images. Having a multi-generational mix of learners in the building, makes for a contagious enthusiasm about a subject that doesn't come easily to many of us. This place is a real gem. Try it on First Fridays when the locals come to rub elbows and share vino in a convivial atmosphere of artistic indulgence!
  • This is a venue for visual arts. They also have all sorts of classes, like improv, storytelling, belly dancing. Also artists have studios here.
  • Super fun! I got to see glass blowing in the basement in addition to all the other wonderful art.
  • If you love art and love to interact with professional artists ... that is the place for you. There are always open studios, just walk in talk with the artists or watch them do their miracles.
