Before you enter First Colony, stop to admire the stunning thatch roof. As one of the most expensive you can have, the roof is brilliant! We arrived at opening and tasting room staff were running late...  more »

We got there right when it opened on a Monday and the staff in the tasting room was the best. Knowledgeable about the wines there and gave an unbiased comparison to wineries nearby. Buildings are beau...  more »

While traveling in the area we decided to check out some of the wineries and were able to find First Colony. It is off Highway 20 and feels a bit out of the way, but is worth the effort to stop for wi...  more »

A must visit. Michael was so hospitable to our group of 9 when other Charlottesville vineyards were not. He was very knowledgeable and kept us laughing the whole wine tasting! The wines were amazing and we all left with different bottles of our favorites. We will be back every time we are in the area.

We stopped by the winery on a whim and we're so glad we did. The tasting room is very cozy, and there's lots of outdoor seating. The staff was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and gave a lot of information about the wines. Of course, all that wouldn't matter if the wines weren't any good, but they did not disappoint! We're red wine drinkers, and their reds are very tasty, but we found we loved many of their white wines too - definitely try some!

First Colony is a top notch vineyard and winery just outside of Charlottesville! From the wine, to the staff and even the decor, it is apparent how much heart and soul is put in every aspect of the business. You will not regret spending an afternoon sipping on their delicious wine. As a bonus, the winery is dog friendly!

Much to my surprise I stumbled across a really nice version of port at FCW

Wine was great and staff (including the cute dog and talkative cat) were very friendly! We loved our visit to this winery and plan to return when in the area.

Where to stay in Charlottesville

Hotels and inns in Charlottesville's lively downtown area offer proximity to the city's main attractions, but they can be on the expensive side. There are several more inexpensive options located along or near Emmet Street, which is a short drive from the main thoroughfare. Alternatively, immerse yourself in local history by staying at a centuries-old bed and breakfast. Many of these establishments are complete with fine period furnishings.
