Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Charlotte

#3 of 10 in Outdoors in Charlotte
Little Sugar Creek Greenway is a linear park and stream restoration project in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. When completed it will consist of twenty miles of trails and paved walkways running from Cordelia Park just north of uptown Charlotte, then south through midtown Charlotte, and continuing all the way to the South Carolina state line. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway will be a key part of the Carolina Thread Trail, a regionwide network of trails that will ultimately pass through 15 counties.Greenways are narrow strips of land, planted and managed to provide both human recreation and wildlife habitat. Greenways along streams, such as Little Sugar Creek, improve water quality and help control flooding. There are about 37 miles of developed greenways in Mecklenburg County, of which this is only one.The two urban sections of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway were championed by Central Piedmont Community College president Tony Zeiss and together provide five unbroken miles of paved walkway from East 7th Street southward to Brandywine Road.HistoryLittle Sugar CreekUnlike many large cities, Charlotte is not sited on or near a sea, lake, or significant river; its hydrogeography is based on small streams and creeks, Little Sugar Creek being perhaps the most prominent. The name of Little Sugar Creek (which has also been called Sugar Creek, a name that has also been applied to what is now called Irwin Creek) derives from the Sugaree tribe indigenous to the area.

  • Great place for bike ride or run. Lots of public art, fountains, and signage to keep your walk interesting. We even saw a Blue heron. Connects with Freedom Park which is a great place to spend time running, biking or with family.
  • Definitely a nice greenway. Only drawback is that people on bikes go fast and you have to pay attention. It's a good length and even connects with Freedom park. Once you get closer to uptown, the views are so pretty!!
  • Very nice walk way, well kept and landscaped. Scenic bridges, statues and parks all along the way. The only drawback was two gay men engaged in touching one another (putting it nicely) and in doing so they decided for me that I needed to inform my children of the gay movement (which grossed them out)! Other than that, it was a wonderful family setting with lots of children, older couples, music and festivities along the way.
  • If you like a metropolitan/park setting then you will love Little Sugar Creek Greenway. The walkway is bike friendly with a wide path and runs alongside a shallow creek. It is a pleasant walk way lined with landscaped areas, a few shops and cafes, and several smaller metropolitan parks. It also tunnels under the streets so your stroll is uninterrupted. Please be considerate of others with your language and conduct
  • A pleasant, easy walk (unless it's hot and you don't like the heat). I haven't walked the whole length of it, but it's nicely groomed, has signage describing notable points about the ecology and the design of the path, and a few benches for resting.
