Battery & White Point Gardens, Charleston

4.6
#4 of 10 in Parks in Charleston
Garden Nature / Park
Once a weapon-filled defensive site, Battery & White Point Gardens is now designed for peace and tranquility. As you walk through the pleasant park and gardens, you can examine cannons, statues, and other monuments, including a bronze bust of famous poet, novelist, and historian W.G. Simms. Look for the commemorative marker for a pirate captain and his crew who were hung at the site about 300 years ago. All your wandering will be in the shadow of many large antebellum houses, surrounded by oak trees and overlooking the Charleston Harbor. The gardens are suitable for picnicking, recreation, photography, and other leisurely activities. Where to stay in Charleston

Charleston is serviced by dozens of local hotels and practically every major U.S. chain. Expect to pay top dollar for a room on the downtown peninsula, particularly if you wish to stay in one of the historic hotels. The upside of taking a room there is the proximity of all major attractions--you won't need a car to explore and enjoy your visit. Less expensive options are available in North Charleston, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant, where you'll find all kinds of inns for the budget-conscious traveler.

  • The old oak trees of this park are amazing and having free parking is a plus. We love walking the sidewalk around the waters and letting the kids just play on the grassy areas under the trees. The location is a short walk to downtown restaurants and stores. Every time we come to Charleston we have to come here.
  • Such a neat place and at night it is very romantic. I had my wedding in the gazebo. My wife and I couldn't have been happier to been at such a beautiful place!
  • Very scenic and worth walking around. Great for tourists and locals both. No restrooms nearby so if you have little kids take them to the restroom before you head over. The park, water and beautiful homes make it a must see at least once.
  • Beautiful old trees, many old cannons and memorial statues. Views of the Ashley and Cooper rivers. Great place for pictures.
  • Nice place to enjoy a stroll. The park is heavily shaded and a great place to enjoy a picnic or just a walk. They do allow off-leash dogs but it didn't seem like a problem. Most dogs seemed well trained and had no issues!
