Wildlife Area Nature / Park
Audubon Swamp Garden is a 60acre cypress and tupelo swamp on the grounds of Magnolia Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. At one time, the swamp served as a reservoir for the plantation's rice cultivation. Today, the swamp garden includes native flora but also non-native, exotic plantings and is home to herons, ibis, turtles, otters, alligators, and other wildlife. The swamp garden is named for the ornithologist and artist John James Audubon, who visited the plantation before the Civil War and is said to have collected waterfowl specimens there as models for his paintings. More recently, director Wes Craven made use of the site while filming the 1982 horror movie Swamp Thing.

  • If it's not raining now, that's a really interesting garden! In September after a long rain and warm temperatures, it was slightly sudorific but interesting!

  • Being in Charleston I assumed this would be a hot and humid walk; it was surprisingly cool in the shade. You could easily do this walk with a single water bottle in your hand if you're hydrated prior ...  more »

  • Amazing. Beautiful. Gorgeous gardens and bridges. Very romantic.
  • This was a good walk. Plenty of wildlife and well maintained paths.
  • Alligators were very visible and you were not separated by a glass enclosure.
  • Basically a big garden - history angle is overblown and over-rated.
  • What a beautiful walk in such a peaceful setting! Birds, alligators, a lake and the swamps. We absolutely loved it here!

Where to stay in Charleston

Charleston is serviced by dozens of local hotels and practically every major U.S. chain. Expect to pay top dollar for a room on the downtown peninsula, particularly if you wish to stay in one of the historic hotels. The upside of taking a room there is the proximity of all major attractions--you won't need a car to explore and enjoy your visit. Less expensive options are available in North Charleston, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant, where you'll find all kinds of inns for the budget-conscious traveler.
