4.1
#7 of 10 in Parks in Charleston
Audubon Swamp Garden is a 60acre cypress and tupelo swamp on the grounds of Magnolia Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. At one time, the swamp served as a reservoir for the plantation's rice cultivation. Today, the swamp garden includes native flora but also non-native, exotic plantings and is home to herons, ibis, turtles, otters, alligators, and other wildlife. The swamp garden is named for the ornithologist and artist John James Audubon, who visited the plantation before the Civil War and is said to have collected waterfowl specimens there as models for his paintings. More recently, director Wes Craven made use of the site while filming the 1982 horror movie Swamp Thing.

The swamp provided an enjoyable experience with lots of wildlife and birds. There is a boardwalk and many trails throughout. As birders, we were excited to see so many different species.  more »

Nice swamp garden. Mostly on walkways but trail is sometimes not and is near the water. Warning signs about alligators.  more »

Alligators were very visible and you were not separated by a glass enclosure.

Basically a big garden - history angle is overblown and over-rated.

What a beautiful walk in such a peaceful setting! Birds, alligators, a lake and the swamps. We absolutely loved it here!
