The West Virginia State Capitol is the seat of government for the U.S. state of West Virginia, and houses the West Virginia Legislature and the office of the Governor of West Virginia. Located in Charleston, West Virginia, the building was dedicated in 1932. Along with the West Virginia Executive Mansion it is part of the West Virginia Capitol Complex, a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.BackgroundPrior to the American Civil War, the counties that would ultimately form West Virginia were a part of the state of Virginia; the state capital was in Richmond, Virginia. After Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the northwestern counties of Virginia loyal to the United States started the process which would ultimately create the State of West Virginia on June 20, 1863.Settling on a state capital location proved to be difficult. For several years, the capital of West Virginia shifted back and forth between Wheeling and Charleston. Other locations, including Martinsburg and Clarksburg were offered as alternatives. The state's citizens voted on the final location of their capital, Charleston, on August 7, 1877.

  • So far I have personally visited 45 out of 50 states and I always try to make a point of visiting the state capitol building whenever possible. So that being said I would have to say that West Virgini...  more »
  • The building is beautiful. Architecture and layout of building is as nice as any capitols we visited. We could not get a guided tour but there was enough information available to self guide.  more »

  • I was blown away by how nice the museum was. I loved learning about West Virgninas heritage and more. I would love to go again. Didn't get to fit the whole place in before they closed.
  • The West Virginia State Museum was one of the best State history museums I've been to. The museum had a theme in every section. You start off in prehistoric times, to the foundation of the State and it's history of the civil war, to coal mining and the present. This is a place I would visit again.
  • Good museum. I wish many state would follow this example. Unfortunately, the history of slavery seemed like a footnote :(
  • Love this place! Used to visit here as a kid and it's still wonderful! I recommend going on the weekends, as per their website, metered parking isn't monitored. And there's less people and you can tour by yourself.
  • Awesome museum. Way bigger and extensive than I expected. Good mix of artifacts and information. Everything from prehistoric to modern history of the state. Definitely worth a stop if you are stopping by.
