(4.3/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web)
Since 1958, the Ackland Art Museum has been one of North Carolina's most important cultural resources.

With free admission to all, the Ackland Art Museum presents more than a dozen exhibitions every year, offering a wide stylistic range of art, from contemporary American photography to European master paintings, video installations to Early Modern portraits. The Ackland’s holdings – over 16,000 works of art – include significant collections of European masterworks, twentieth-century and contemporary art, African art, North Carolina pottery, and folk art. In addition, the Ackland has North Carolina’s premier collections of Asian art and works on paper (drawings, prints, and photographs). The Museum's second floor Study Gallery is a dynamic space that exhibits art installed specifically for use by University classes.

The Ackland has a vibrant and active program and event schedule offering music, films, gallery talks, and other activities on weekends and during the Museum's extended Thursday evening hours.

  • Visit the Ackland Art Museum is one of the activities that you can do in this small university town of North Carolina. You will find paintings and sculptures of different artistic styles and locations. All organized in a pleasant and very didactic way, so most likely that you agree with any UNC Professor and his students performing any visit. The entrance is free.

  • Check it out--its free! Ackland has an amazing collection of ancient-modern art. The exhibits rotate and change with relative frequency; look them up online and see what the current exhibits are. Compared to other art museums I have visited, Ackland is on the smaller side, but I don't see that as a negative.
  • Great little art museum in downtown Chapel Hill. Very interesting collections.
  • This museum is a little gem. There are amazing pieces you would never expect to find here. Chapel Hill is really lucky to have it, a must see.
  • Small but very nice, lovely collection. Free coffee in the lobby at 10 and 2.
  • This was a wonderful small Museum with a surprisingly varied collection.
