Chittenango Falls State Park, Cazenovia
(4.6/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Chittenango Falls State Park is a 194acre state park located in Madison County, New York, east of Cazenovia Lake. The park features a 167ft waterfall that cascades over roughly 400-million-year-old bedrock, flowing beneath a wooden bridge spanning the meandering Chittenango Creek. The park offers a variety of activities including picnic tables with pavilions, a playground, a nature trail, hiking, and fishing.Approximately 45,000 visitors come to the park each year to engage in a variety of outdoor recreational activities. Although many camping guides still mistakenly list it as a campground, the park's campground was closed in the mid-2000s.Chittenango Falls State Park is also home to the endemic and endangered Chittenango ovate amber snail (Novisuccinea chittenangoensis).Trails and scenic viewingWhile the park is open year-round, the trail leading to the falls' viewing bridge is closed during winter months due to icy conditions. Views of the falls are still quite picturesque from the top however, with the ability to view the falls from the side of the creek or from a small viewing rail. There is also a steep uphill trail allowing visitors to walk along the side of the lower creek to the top of the falls. Along that trail, there are several viewing spots.

  • Chittenango Falls is a gem of a place to go for a nice walk and enjoy nature not far from Syracuse. The drive to it from Cazenovia is also quite beautiful with lots of twists and turns. Well laid out ...  more »
  • We did the gorge trail and part of the creek-side trail. You really need to go on the gorge trail to see the whole falls. If you aren't prepared to do the whole loop you can go to the first lookout af...  more »

  • Great hiking trails for nice, scenic views of the waterfalls. Trails loop around to each other at the bottom to allow the visitors to see all parts of Chittenango Falls. A few stairs tho, so make sure you pace yourself and take plenty of breaks to enjoy the nature around you! Longer trails located in the surrounding wooded areas in the park. Fun to hike, but no waterfall next to you.
  • Beautiful Falls with a view available to all! This is a must see when in the area! Small state park open 7AM to dusk. Paved trail to falls overlook and paved trail to wonderful benches, picnic tables with grills, and several picnic shelters. This truly is a park that anyone can access! However, the lower falls trails and the trail that runs along the Chittenango Creek requires a steady climb down then up. Rock stairs are there, but slippery dependent on the conditions. Fun for young kids and steady adults! Hiking here is short spurts, but the scenery is great. Wonderful spot for lunch or dinner, especially on the weekends. *Side Note: This park only has porta johns. So be prepared for that. What's with people who throw their trash in a porta john, just bad form!!
  • Great water fall to visit. Make sure you go all the way to the bottom to get a great day view.
  • It's a great place, to inspire motivation and consume fresh, relaxing country air. And yeah, the water never stops falling there.
  • Holy cow gorgeous waterfall! Good picnic areas. Wild blackcaps always a plus. The stairs are unmaintained and difficult to navigate.
