  • We truly enjoyed Onyx cave. Missy our tour guide was very informative and answered all of our questions for us. I highly suggest you do the store even if you plan on doing Mammoth Cave tours.
  • The tour guide was so amazing and was very knowledgeable of the cave and its history. There are some stairs and you go down in some tight spaces, but it was worth it. We did not have to make reservati...  more »
  • Loved this tour in the national park . The ranger gave us a nice history of the cave and the formations. The lanterns made it feel very authentic. The ride was maybe 15 minutes and the tour itself aro...  more »

  • Onyx Cave is maybe a tenth of a mile off I-65, and I am sure thousands of people drive by on the their way to Mammoth without noticing this cave or even giving it consideration. Plus it's right across the road from the dinosaur tourist place, and it would be easy to think this was of the same ilk. But this is the real deal! My two teenage kids and I thoroughly enjoyed this cave experience. After a short wait upstairs in the rock shop (which has some cool stuff at decent prices), our small tour of 6 was led behind the building and through a steel door into the cave. The early part of the tour feels like you are not going deep into the earth, but be patient. Eventually you'll decend about 40 feet down very sturdy steel stairs and find yourself in a truly amazing underworld cave, surrounded by stone flow, stalagtites, stalagmites, cave coral... Everything you hope to see in a cave. There are beautiful spaces, a few tight squeezes (fun not scary), and the whole path is well lit and the pathways are level for the most part. Our tour lasted just under 40 minutes, led by a very friendly and knowledgeable young woman. Perfect amount of time and well worth the $8.95 admission. It's a bargain to see such a natural wonder. Only caution, there are a lot of stairs, they are all excellent with 100% solid treads and railings (and well-lit), but for older folks with knee problems or balance problems on stairs, this might not be a good choice. For everyone else though this a solid 5 stars. We loved it.no
  • What a great tour. Blows other cave tours outta water almost entirely because of the knowledge and the enthusiam of our tour guide. You "Rock" Jared!!
  • Smaller cave, super helpful friendly informative guide. Really nice features. Totally recommend stopping there. Rock shop above has a nice selection. Coupon available, check tourist info areas.
  • So happy we went here! The gift shop had some awesome stuff and super friendly staff. The tour thru the cave only took about 30 minutes since it's one of the smaller caves. However, this cave was one of best I've had the pleasure of visiting! The tour guide(Missy) was amazing! Not only did she know everything about this cave, she knew a lot about the surrounding caves and their histories..and very friendly too..I wish I could've taken her home with me! Thanks Again!;)
  • This cave was awesome!! I went there with my daughter Maya, who is very interested in scientific things and nature. The formations are simply beautiful and truly a sight to behold. FANTASTIC!
