Where to stay in Cave City

Aside from theme hotels, such as the Wigwam Village Motel, there are also economy lodgings. Because the town was designed as a resort area, there are a large number of hotels relative to the town's population. Many of these accept walk-in guests.

  • We had done the Frozen Niagara Tour at Mammoth, but wanted a little more cave adventure. It was late afternoon and raining, and the two of us were the last tour of the day. It's not a large cave, but ...  more »
  • The only reason we went to Onyx Cave was due to the reviews on this app. Everything said don't miss this. This cave tour was an amazing experience. While mammoth ave is a dry cave, onyx cave is a wet ...  more »
  • This was the first cave tour we did in our three days in the area. It was a perfect way to start our caving adventure. Our guide was Jarred, he was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about caves, ...  more »

  • Get there early. Had the cave tour all to ourselves. Guide very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his job. Beautiful tour, easy enough for us to take our four-year-old on. Not handicap accessible. Not for those with limited mobility. The shop itself had an amazing selection, service was outstanding. Pricing was good. Best display of any shop I've ever seen. Will come back for more, one day!
  • It's a cave close to Dinosaur World. Just across the road to it. However, many people neglect it as it is far less well-known than Mammoth Cave. Nonetheless, it's worthy of visiting. And don't over focus on the word "shop". It's just the entrance and where tourists buy their tickets. I was guided with 4 senior citizens by a young lady and that means I can have more chance to talk with the guide. Thus, I saw very compact gorgeous scenery and that is quite different from Mammoth Cave, of which beauty is more distracted. Inside the cave, I walked through long path and stairs that should be called "fat man's misery"(like in Mammoth Cave, not a discriminationšŸ˜). But the ceiling was fairly high most of the time. In addition, some places of the cave look like Frozen Niagara of Mammoth Cave. In general, it's an decent place to visit if you want a short, easy and compact cave tour. The entire visiting time was 40 minutes(The introduction is 30~35 minutes)
  • Very cool cave. Neat journey. Guide was very informative.
  • It was great. The guide was very knowledgeable we learned more from her than any of the other cave tours.
  • Onyx Cave is maybe a tenth of a mile off I-65, and I am sure thousands of people drive by on the their way to Mammoth without noticing this cave or even giving it consideration. Plus it's right across the road from the dinosaur tourist place, and it would be easy to think this was of the same ilk. But this is the real deal! My two teenage kids and I thoroughly enjoyed this cave experience. After a short wait upstairs in the rock shop (which has some cool stuff at decent prices), our small tour of 6 was led behind the building and through a steel door into the cave. The early part of the tour feels like you are not going deep into the earth, but be patient. Eventually you'll decend about 40 feet down very sturdy steel stairs and find yourself in a truly amazing underworld cave, surrounded by stone flow, stalagtites, stalagmites, cave coral... Everything you hope to see in a cave. There are beautiful spaces, a few tight squeezes (fun not scary), and the whole path is well lit and the pathways are level for the most part. Our tour lasted just under 40 minutes, led by a very friendly and knowledgeable young woman. Perfect amount of time and well worth the $8.95 admission. It's a bargain to see such a natural wonder. Only caution, there are a lot of stairs, they are all excellent with 100% solid treads and railings (and well-lit), but for older folks with knee problems or balance problems on stairs, this might not be a good choice. For everyone else though this a solid 5 stars. We loved it.
