Bonneville Lock & Dam reviews
We drove in but could not see anything. The visitor's center and the hatchery were closed. We had to turn around and leave. more »
We were there in April 2019 which is not good fish time but still a fascinating place. Really enjoyed the trip. We did not do the tour but walked around ourselves. saw heaps and there was so much to..... more »
This impressive dam was originally opened in 1937 in the Columbia river gorge to provide electrical power generation. The reservoir formed behind the dam is Lake Bonneville. Building this structure... more »
We tried to visit, but we got to the gate and it was closed. The sign ON the gate said open till 5pm and there was a man there working, but when asked if we could drive to the Visitor Center he just hollered, "No! It's closed!" No other explanation. Everything online said it would be open. It's not a major holiday and it's the middle of the afternoon. No rhyme or reason, just a rude hollering man and a wasted trip.
Lovely place to bring your family, especially late spring & fall when temps. are cooler. Both the young & the young at heart will enjoy thier visit. Loved the Sturgeon above water & below water viewing ponds. Bring a handful of quarters to buy feed pellets for trout & salmon & a picnic to feed your family. Well kept grounds, nice lil gift shop. Good info at each exhibit. Took my 70 yr young MILaw, she really enjoyed her visit!! Paved Trails: stroller/wheelchair/walker friendly. No entry or parking fees.
GET HYPE! this is a dam good time!!! Are you out at Multnomah Falls? Then take the time to take yourself HERE! You can tour the hydroelectric facility during specific hours, and read so much cool stuff at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility here - from the history of the mountain range to the history of the area from native americans to now, and how the dam and hydroelectric facilities operate. You can walk around and look at all the fish on the fish ladder, and go down into the building and look through the glass at the fish and LAMPREY EELS in the water and learn and observe the native fish in the river. You can just walk around the gorgeous fields or go down to the river and fish! This was one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable things I did. Forget all those crowds at the waterfalls for a few lousy instagram shots. Get yourself to this dam.
Traveling from California and just decided to take a drive towards the Gorge. We decided to stop anywhere along the way that peaked our interest. When we saw this, we decided to check it out. We are glad we stopped. The volume of water spilling over was an amazing site to see! Wow, that's a lot of water coming from the spillway! There are two sets of spillways and these were all wide open. The ones on the other side were all closed. We timed it just right to see them.
Loved it!!! Weather was great. Didnt realize you could go fishing there
