Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City

(4.3/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
The Nevada State Railroad Museum, located in Carson City, Nevada, preserves the railroad heritage of Nevada, including locomotives and cars of the famous Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Much of the museum equipment was obtained from Hollywood studios, where they were often featured in movies and television. The museum is operated by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.Museum activities consist of operation of historic and narrow gauge railroad equipment, including train rides, handcar rides, lectures, an annual railroad history symposium, changing exhibits, and a variety of special events. The Museum also has an ongoing research and restoration program. The Museum's most recent event is the rebuilding of the interpretation center and possibly the HO scale model railroad operated by the Carson Model Railroaders who operate the Mills Park Railroad. The Wabuska Railroad Station, a historic station from Wabuska, Nevada was relocated to the museum grounds. The building is, in essence, still used as a working railroad station where tickets for the museum train rides are purchased.

  • Very well put together. Very informative. A must for train enthusiasts. Occasionally have a little train running for short rides around the train yard. Some very unique train cars.
  • A small railway museum. Number of exhibits is small. But well presented. Well supported by volunteers. Unfortunately no trains were running when we visited. But were made warmly welcome and personally...  more »
  • We actually went there for a memorial service for one of the volunteers. I would never have put this on my map of places to visit but it turned out to be fascinating. Very inexpensive to tour the muse...  more »

  • Really small but had cool big trains. Save your money and just pay for one trip on the train ride otherwise it's not worth paying 15 perperson for unlimited rides. It's a small track but goes around several times and you even get to see them reverse the train.
  • Had less trains than expected, but it was still fun. My two year old son had fun riding the Choo-Choo!
  • The trains are beautiful and the people friendly and interesting.
  • $6 admission. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteer staff. An incredible collection of engines and cars. Many still in working order, a few you can walk through. Definitely worth stopping to check out. You don't have to be into trains or history to enjoy the museum.
  • I've been visiting this museum since I was a kid. So happy to share it with my own children. The train rides on the weekends are fun too.
