The Crooked River Lighthouse was built in 1895, replacing the three short-lived beacons destroyed by hurricanes on Dog Island. The 103 foot iron and steel structure was decommissioned by the Coast Guard in 1995 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Carrabelle Lighthouse Association (CLA) and the City of Carrabelle obtained ownership of the landmark just weeks before it was to be auctioned, and created a public park surrounding it. Via grants from the Florida State Legislature and financial support from the City of Carrabelle restoration of the structure was completed by 2007. Nestled in a North Florida forest habitat, the lighthouse beams nightly, with an acrylic replica of its original 4th order Fresnel lens.

Grant funding also helped the CLA to construct a replica of the Crooked River Lighthouse Keeper’s House, completed in 2009. Award winning architect Ken Smith designed the construction, using the original 1895 plans. The Keeper’s House serves as a museum, gift shop and headquarters for the CLA. Exhibits are interesting and informative for all ages, including an historical setting of the early 1900s, plus examples of beacons and the methods of constructing a skeletal tower lighthouse.

The park includes a playground featuring a 70 foot pirate ship, a picnic pavilion with tables and is connected to Carrabelle Beach Park via a multi-use transportation path.

  • Moved to Carrabelle a year ago from Pittsburgh and have been planning on climbing to the top. Well it was worth it. The view is amazing and the volunteer at the top was very knowledgable.
  • We didn't get to go into the visitor's center, but just seeing the lighthouse was fun. Hubby called it a very large flight of stairs. A cute lizard accompanied us. There is an attached playground that...  read more »
  • Great view from the top of the lighthouse. Gift shop has good info on the lighthouse construction.
  • We LOVED IT!!!! We had the place ALL to ourselves.
  • The lighthouse is beautifully restored and the view from the top is amazing. The museum is small, but very interesting with informative videos and displays. The gift shop is great and the staff are very friendly and helpful. For kids, the playground with 70' pirate ship Carrabella is just the best. The park has several picnic tables, a pavilion, a bike rack, adult swing and a nice view of the water. Carrabelle Beach begins just across the road.
  • Kids loved the pirate ship play set
  • Almost passed the place but so glad we stopped in. I look forward to sewing my patch on so everyone can ask where is Crooked River
