Carlsbad State Beach, Carlsbad
(4.5/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
Surfers and swimmers alike share the crystal clear waters belonging to Carlsbad State Beach. Take advantage of theĀ 8 km (5 mi) stretch of beaches bordering coastal bluffs. You can try scuba diving, swimming, fishing, and beachcombing here. With its sparse population, shared mainly by residents of campsites on the cliff tops, this beach is a quiet site. Several different areas offer amenities--such as showers, Wi-Fi, and a camp store--spread out along the cliff tops. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of San Diego beaches. To access the beach, head down one of the many wooden staircases. Be aware that lifeguards are not always on duty here. • The beach is quiet and has a nice bluff to help block the wind. A short walk to the south brings you to a fun state beach with wide open space to play, find your own place to take in some sun. Very na...  more »
  • Thus is a great place to walk during December and enjoy moderate weather for a stroll and beach combing.
  • At the time of our visit there was a lot construction going on in the area, so alot of the area was blocked. The bathroom on the beach didn't have anyplace to wash your hands. Not even any hand saniti...  more »

  • I went to camp there at the last weekend. I expected wide camp sites but it was not. The ground was so dusty to set a tent. There was no trees which you can hang a hammock on. The maintenance of facilities were so so. One of the pros is the beautiful beach is close to this campground. If you want to go there, I recommend that you should reserve a beach side site.
  • Love the camping, but such a poorly run state park. Something as simple as opening up the second entrance lane escapes the rangers. If you are checking in, no biggie, you have to wait to get your registration etc. But waiting to get back into the park street check-in is silly. Wait in line for 30 minutes, then drive right past the park Ranger as you already have your window pass. Reservations are also crazy and booking a week is difficult as the weekend fills up first with the college party crowd, leaving weekdays only unless you are reserving in the first 10 minutes of when they go on sale.
  • was cool to be able to camp out near the beach, was cheaper than a hotel, had showers accessible as well as bathrooms, provided a firepit and an area with a table and bench on our individual campsite. only cons were that the camping areas were very close together in proximity to eachother (not as much privacy and noise was a factor. also, our camping space was on the side of the road with lots of noise from cars passing by. To be on the side with the beach (maybe a few feet away from our spot) would have cost an additional 20 dollars or so. this is not camping on the beach, just near it, you still have to walk down to the beach to get there.
  • Fun, safe family atmosphere. Definitely worth the effort to book. Wish we had hook ups (that's why 4 stars). Sites are nice sized! We had 114, HUGE beach site!
  • Camping right in front of the ocean, with the sound of the waves and the breeze coming in. Also, it's good for kids to go around in a safe place and can reach the beach in few minutes. It has a nice little shop. The only con is that it does not have much shade: make sure to have a foldable canopy during the summer.
